Hi everyone,

Really new to MB (2 weeks) and have already received my first gub with Betway. I had the account for all of two days. These were my bets:
Qualifier - £40 stake on Malton Rose -15.30 Worcester. Odds of 2.88. The bet won at the bookies. £115 return. Free bet was : Portugal vs Chile draw. Odds of 3.20. The bet won at the bookies. £63 return. Money withdrawn after this win.

I used a stake of £40 instead of the suggested £30. My match rating was about 90% for both bets. I assumed that I was still giving the bookie value....

What did I do wrong ?

They use a lot of algorithms, cookies and trackers. iesnare is a nasty one (https://justiceforpunters.org/what-is-iesnare-and-how-to-find-it/) and using Ghostery on your browsers can block it and similar. However, Betway are one of those particularly quick on the trigger and it may well have been your withdrawl that did it. Be careful with BetVictor, Paddy Power and Betfred/Totesport as they can also be quick to gub.

Thank you for your reply. In future should I not withdraw the funds ?

That is a very difficult call, and does depend on the bookie. Jon's advice will be to withdraw without worrying about it, but if you can afford to leave it in, or at least place a few bets with the winnings, then that may be a good idea. Withdrawing so soon after the free bet is a bit of a giveaway though.

Hi,

I'm new to this too but I've been reading up on gubbing. Thank you very much for providing your betting history prior to gubbing. It has been very useful to me.

My analysis based on all the mug betting guides I've been reading.
1. Non-mainstream Horse racing (more at risk to gubbing than than televised Football).
2. Non-Premier League Football - Safer to bet with the popular crowd.
3. Non-UK game Football - Without a history of betting on foreign games (are you from Portugal or Chile?), it makes you look like a match better.
4. Change of sport from Horse to Football before you've established a history with the bookie.
5. Winning. Not a lot you can do about that :D
6. Money withdrawn. Combined with the above it makes looks you like a match better rather than a mug because you want the money you've won to go onto the next bookie or re-finance Betfair/Smarkets.

There maybe more but I think those are the points that helped get your account gubbed.

Anyone else have any other ideas/points?

Best of luck

Good post that @firehorse

I would say having a 'mixed' profile with the bookies (and that includes doing slots) works best. I've been doing it for over 2 years and only lost maybe 3 bookies so far.

Hi Jon,

Can I ask, looking back at those 3 bookies with hindsight, if you can identify anything that triggered the gubbings?

How do you do 'mixed' profile? :)

Thanks

Nah nothing that stands out.

Mixed, i just mug bet on a variety of events not one specific sport. I also do slots as well on that bookie.

Still got mine after nearly 2 years of having it!

Still got my bet365 one as well despite doing NUMEROUS football £50 free bets offers with them...

Of course this smug post will be the death of those accounts no doubt lol

You are one of the lucky few...With Bet365 stay away from horse racing and you should be fine...smash the horses and you are gone...haha

Possibly....

1. Agree, especially foreign horses which race in the middle of the night UK time. I know people who quickly got restricted after doing US races.
2 & 3 I think you are on safe ground with any UK league football and also some of the major european leagues. I've done a lot of football with William Hill and Sky and often had some of the Big Spanish and German teams in my accumulators. (with no problems yet, touch wood.)
4. Yes. A mistake I made early on which I think got me gubbed from paddy was I was doing a lot of football with them. Then when I won some free bets (through football) I put them straight on the best matching horse races. Got a better return that way but it probably made my account stand out.
5. Agree.
6. I think as long as you don't withdraw after every win it is ok. In fact it probably looks more odd to leave £200+ in an account if you are only doing £20 bets.

I'll add some more

7. Don't take every free bet offer or bet every one to maximum stakes. Stick to the sports and the stakes you usually do.
8. Don't take blatant arbs. Bookies hate to think they are giving away value. Having said that, dont be scared to take exact matches or tiny arbs here and there. Most people say price boosts are ok too as long as you don't over do it. DO NOT bet on the pricewise selections at 8.30 on a saturday morning however tempting it may be.
9. Despite what you might hear, Each Way arbing is just a likely to get you restricted as normal arbing.
10. Don't use your free bets on bizarre sports just because one is a good match. £20 on Albanian ladies handball is going to stand out a mile if traders decide to review your account.

and as a disclaimer: I thought I was doing all of the above but still lost Ladbrokes this week. The truth is no one really knows what exactly triggers gubbings.

Hi,

How long did you manage to keep your account open?
Did you do accumulators?
Did you play on their casino games as mentioned by Jon?
What was your ratio of mug bets to free offer bets?
Did you bet on a 'favourite' football team or was it a different team each week?
Did you watch the horse race/bet event when it was being streamed from the website?
Did you ever bet in-game?
Did you ever bet on their mobile app?

Just trying to see if what I've read matches up.

Thanks

Interesting research you are doing here firehose. There is a danger in this though - That you will draw up a huge list of things which will guarantee your account never to get gubbed; but it will also severely limit the offers you do and the profit you can extract from the free bets.

but let's see.....

How long did you manage to keep your account open? - around 8 months I think.
Did you do accumulators? - Yes, occasionally.
Did you play on their casino games as mentioned by Jon? - Yes
What was your ratio of mug bets to free offer bets? - I tried to make every other bet a mug bet.
Did you bet on a 'favourite' football team or was it a different team each week? - Different teams.
Did you watch the horse race/bet event when it was being streamed from the website? - No
Did you ever bet in-game? Occasionally, but only when a free bet required it.
Did you ever bet on their mobile app? Occasionally, but only when a free bet required it.

You may be on to something with those last two as I hadn't considered that before. Thinking back, the only time I did any mobile or in play bets was when a bonus or free bet needed it.

Never seems any sense to some people getting gubbed and others not. Not bothering much about it all anymore. I just withdraw when I want do the offers I want just not every single offer. Do a mug bet when I win or get a refund or free bet and so far still got a few Accounts to keep me going.
I don't see the point though of arbing on gubbed Accounts though. As the bookies know you are doing it don't like it so are going to just eventually restrict your stakes down to nothing. So then you can't make anything anyway.

Good analysis....no one really knows why bookies gub customers, to be honest i dont bother with mugging alot as people who mug alot get gubbed too, even normal punters who never do any offers get gubbed. What do bookies want other than making people poorer?

Agree with you totally regarding mug bettting. I did allot when I first started but got gubbed anyway so don't do much now and that works ok.
Bookies must each have their own algorithms to decide who to gub. Or it is just random getting rid of customers after awhile who aren't profitable enough long term.
