Love your posts. This may sound daft but I find myself "doing a Mab" on a daily basis. Let me explain.
I always read your generous posts offering guidance to Shedders trying out paid apps like Roamler, Field Agent etc etc and I notice you steer clear of certain tasks by labelling them as "barge pole" jobs, ie not worth the time and effort. I gave up most of the paid apps a while ago for various reasons, but I now apply your Barge Pole Philosophy to any type of Shedder opportunity - and beyond.
I joined uTest recently as a total newbie to software testing, and I'm loving it. I receive lots of invites to "cycles" (testing a specific app) which are accompanied by an overview describing the product to be tested and specific details about what is in scope for testing, how many known issues (bugs) there are etc etc (the overview can be very long and detailed - and not always well-written). I consciously "do a Mab" while reading through these, and filter out which invites to decline by applying the Barge Pole test to them.
Eg: Am I being invited to a cycle where the overview contains an Excel attachment with 84 known issues (often written in gobbledygook)? Barge pole.
Am I being invited to a cycle with 12 hours left before it locks, but 8 of those hours are when normal humans are in bed asleep? Barge pole.
Am I being invited to a cycle that has been running for several days and no bugs have been reported so they're getting desperate? Nah. Barge pole.
All of these invites have the potential to consume a lot of valuable time with very little, or no, reward.
I hope you don't find it too weird being thought about on a daily basis by somebody you don't know lol
but it's all done with the best intentions!
I would love to know how other Shedders "do a Mabozza" and apply the Barge Pole Philosophy to any paid opportunities they may be contemplating?
