Can't believe another year is ending!

I don't make new years resolutions as I just think they end up limiting you in one way or another so just go forth and be as amazing as you guys were in 2017!

@mabozza congrats! You are a legend - Happy 2018 to you :D and I hope you and the missus feel much better soon

Love your posts. This may sound daft but I find myself "doing a Mab" on a daily basis. Let me explain.

I always read your generous posts offering guidance to Shedders trying out paid apps like Roamler, Field Agent etc etc and I notice you steer clear of certain tasks by labelling them as "barge pole" jobs, ie not worth the time and effort. I gave up most of the paid apps a while ago for various reasons, but I now apply your Barge Pole Philosophy to any type of Shedder opportunity - and beyond.

I joined uTest recently as a total newbie to software testing, and I'm loving it. I receive lots of invites to "cycles" (testing a specific app) which are accompanied by an overview describing the product to be tested and specific details about what is in scope for testing, how many known issues (bugs) there are etc etc (the overview can be very long and detailed - and not always well-written). I consciously "do a Mab" while reading through these, and filter out which invites to decline by applying the Barge Pole test to them.

Eg: Am I being invited to a cycle where the overview contains an Excel attachment with 84 known issues (often written in gobbledygook)? Barge pole.

Am I being invited to a cycle with 12 hours left before it locks, but 8 of those hours are when normal humans are in bed asleep? Barge pole.

Am I being invited to a cycle that has been running for several days and no bugs have been reported so they're getting desperate? Nah. Barge pole.

All of these invites have the potential to consume a lot of valuable time with very little, or no, reward.

I hope you don't find it too weird being thought about on a daily basis by somebody you don't know lol  but it's all done with the best intentions!

I would love to know how other Shedders "do a Mabozza" and apply the Barge Pole Philosophy to any paid opportunities they may be contemplating?

haha, great post @coomassie_blu

'Doing a mab' I imagine is quite common on here as you find there are more and more ways of getting paid more money for the same amount of time you would spend doing the task.

As an example, I recently tried to do the latest Appen task of rating transaction queries and after about 30 minutes I just thought 'I can't do this anymore!' and can get paid more doing an extra MBing offer or two in a matter of minutes than driving myself mad rating queries

So for me 'Doing a mab' is a case of asking myself two questions

a) Am I being paid above the UK minimum wage per hour doing this
b) Could I earn more money in less time doing something different!

Happy new year. I've only been doing this 3 weeks and I understand doing a mab already. I'm not ditching anything yet but there are a couple that are on their way out already.

HNY Mabozza!

May your work be well travelled, with plenty of great paying Task360/BeMyEye/et al jobs right next door.
