Have you ever bought something from a shop to sell online for more money?

Many years ago when I was about 16 and first thinking about becoming self employed, I noticed something in a high street store that was selling for 5 x the price online. I can't remember what prompted me to look in the first place but I happened to notice what I could buy for £1 was selling for £5 so bought 5 of them. I remember feeling so excited that I could buy something for £1 and then sell it for £5 and make myself a little profit. I was probably only getting about £1 profit per item (about £5 max profit after selling all 5 items) after all the fees and postage though but it was the thrill of it. Until it all went downhill from there when someone decided to shame me on the platforms forum about the exact same item they had seen in the exact same shop that I had bought them from, with the price. The comments I received and the fact that everyone wanted their money back made me think twice about wanting to buy and sell online. So my little profit scheme was a failure as I had made a loss once everyone was refunded. People were saying how disgusting I was etc and it really hurt and being that young, I did think my actions were bad so I stopped buying to resell.

Fast forward many years later when I was getting fed up working for others as an employee and was toying with the idea of becoming self employed again. This time I was buying from places like car boots etc and built up an extreme appetite for stuff to resell as I found it completely enjoyable.

Out of curiosity last week, I decided to look on ebay to see what a certain item in poundworld was selling for and was astonished to see that was selling for 4 x its price online. And then I thought that many people must do this. It must be more popular than I think. In a way it's only like anyone really that buys to resell. What do you think? Do you think it's right to buy something from a shop to sell online for more money or do you think its wrong? Have you ever done this yourself?

I did an amazing line in TV Aerials from Poundland that I sold for £6.50 a time

Stuffing those into Jiffy Bags was no easy task!!

Yes - camera lenses a few years back. Was buying them from a specialist retailer and selling them on eBay making approx £25 a lens profit.

It's good to see people buying and selling again on ebay. Hopefully no one else has come across the kind of treatment I had in the beginning.

How are you finding ebay recently? I remember the good ole days when I would have about 10-20 sales in one weekend but these days I'm lucky if I have one sale a week!! Although judging by the forums, it appears most people are in the same boat. I would hate the day ebay disappears as I would feel back to square one. I only do surveys other than ebay and at the moment I am earning more from surveys than I am from ebay

Funnily enough I've just set up an eBay store as a sideline business. My plan is to sell clothes and collectibles as they're the best sellers on eBay these days!

@yorkiefiona what you're describing is actually two separate things.

The first, buying something new and sealed from a shop and selling it online for a profit is called retail arbitrage and is quite popular with people who like to sell things on Amazon in particular.

The second, buying something second-hand from a car boot sale or charity shop etc is called reselling. There's loads online about it - if you look up Nic & Andera hills on youtube you'll see some good videos if it's something you want to try out :)

I don't do it (as you will get abuse for doing it but someone will pay the money for it) but Disney stuff from Primark seems to sell well on Facebook and ebay. Not tshirts but Bags, shoes, suitcases, home ware, ears etc.

Thanks @Andrew I had no idea there was even a name for it other than reselling. Thanks for the YT suggestion, I'll go and have a look. I wish you well with your new ebay shop

I do see lots of people selling Primark clothes that are themed (e.g. Harry Potter) and also IKEA goods since for IKEA you can't get everything delivered and the delivery charges are quite high. Not done it myself... I have only sold things I didn't want anymore.

I don't buy much from eBay anymore either.. just the odd thing here or there, although I do like to buy second hand books.

@Queen Jess reselling is my plan B :)

This time of year is always slow as people are doing 'other things' and not glued to their computers. Anyone that has read my threads knows that reselling can be very profitable. On rare occasions I have done well buying from shops and reselling, but I find it much easier to buy from car boots and charity shops. I cant be bothered to pack items for tiny profits unless they are 'stick in an envelope' items. An example of an item I am selling at the moment cost 40p and is at present on £21 with 3 days to go.

Summer is the quiet season for ALL online businesses apart from those selling fans!!!

No one wants to be stuck inside glued to the computer in this heat!!

Going back to your original post... why on earth did you refund?! If they were happy to pay the price you listed for and didn't do research as to where they could buy the items elsewhere then that's their problem! Where do they think shops get their items from? Wholesalers! Then they add on extra to cover their costs and get a bit of profit... that's business!

Re selling Primark etc items... I'd buy them... I don't live near a Primark and by the time I add on costs to get into the city, food etc I'd be cheaper buying online. I found a lot of people do similar on Amazon where they may have a voucher to use so don't really begrudge paying a bit extra for the convenience.

I used to get free sim cards and sell those on Amazon etc. It was great when you got something ending in like 0000, 1111 etc because people were willing to pay a premium for it.

I don't have Primark, Poundland, B&M etc in my town so I have used EBay sometimes to get clothing from Primark at a higher price, but when you factor in the train fare to get to my nearest city, EBay is cheaper for a lot of people
