Sorry guys been away for a while but back now at least for foreseeable future.

I have had my tax estimates through for next year and see car benefit is on there.

I have updated via government gateway but I got rid of the car before I left previous employment in June last year and was told everything would be sorted.

I'm now panicking thinking they are going to hit me with a tax bill. I could be panicking for nothing aand may even get a rebate but I just want to put mind at ease and know

So this has been on ever since I handed it back. Any advice and the images show my original tax code and new one

Ok, so I am guessing if you are using government gateway and did have a company car that you have a full or part time job and then also have other income from things like surveys etc?

I believe that your company car is taxed by reducing your personal allowance and therefore it is built into your taxes during the year. If you don't have it anymore, you shouldn't have a decrease in your personal allowance and therefore should pay less tax. I would say you can ring HMRC, but I think this is for a prior year and isn't on your current one (2018-19?), So there isn't much point unless you aren't doing self assessment for the relevant period.

If you do nothing it will be sorted out through your self assessment. Don't forget that all the tax codes do is take a best 'guess' at your tax due and things like job changes, bonuses etc all tends to screw things up. When I get to the end of the year mine is always wrong by at least £100.

If you are worried and you have pretty simple tax affairs you could calculate the tax you think you owe for the period and compare it to what you actually paid. Or if you assume everything else is correct (probably not quite right since you left your job and it takes a while for HMRC to change estimates of tax), the extra tax you would have paid should be the £3,607 X 9/12 (9 months pro rated for the period you didn't have the car last year) multiplied by whatever top percentage of tax you pay (20% or 40% as I assume you don't earn above £100k!).

Sorry, I did base this on the images you sent. I notice you say car is on there for the next year - 2018-19, but I can't see it on the image and I presumed the other one must be the prior year?

If it is on your tax code notice for 2018-19, just give HMRC a call to get it taken off. That kind of stuff is usually pretty easy to do, although they do like to leave you in a queue for ages on the phone lines.
