I want to suggest some hobbies to my 16 year old daughter. She obviously can't go out and meet her friends so is probably getting bored. She has adult colouring books and Disney Plus. I have no idea what's "in" at the moment. If it's a hobby that there are videos on Instagram of, this could persuade her! I just don't want hermental health to suffer and want to make sure she has enough to do. Any ideas?

Maybe have a chat with her and see if there are any skills she wants to learn. There are loads of youtube videos and courses online to help with this. Both mine are back at school/college next week - thank goodness but have been doing a lot of creative stuff - painting, drawing, learning instruments plus I make them do some housework - anything to break up their days and get them away from screens for a short while. I have had mixed results.

Making videoes / dancing on TikTok seems to be all the rage with “the kids”

Thanks for the suggestions, I will ask if there’s anything she wants to learn. She wouldn’t want to make videos or dance! I forgot to say, I have asked and asked. Offered to buy what she needs. I just had another chat with her and she wants to go for a walk each day (we live in a very small village). She likes taking photos so she can do that on the walks. So that’s good. We have gone on walks some days but it would be good to get into a routine of going every day. She seems happy enough. I told her to keep thinking and let me know if there’s anything she wants to do. It was her GCSE year so she won’t be going back to school until September at the earliest.

Maybe suggest/come up with a theme for her photography for example trees or abstract like broken things and make a project out of the photos. Maybe even suggest making a display to be shown in the village at some point in the future? Something for her to aim to do in the long term.

It’s hard isn’t it - the boredom you can justify as an adult because of what is happening but for a kid it probably isn’t that easy

How about signing up to Red Bubble and putting together a few simple designs to upload onto their site. They have templates fot T shirts, mugs, stickers, bags. Even simple text based stuff will kill a few hours and all her designs will be there on the Web in her own shop

If she likes taking photos then perhaps encourage her to find an outlet for her photos.

I'm on a website which has nothing to do with photography but they have a weekly photo challenge for a few members. Nothing serious, just some fun. There will be other similar sites with more frequent/different photo challenges.

16 is a funny old age. Too old to be doing 'kid' stuff and too young to be doing 'adult' stuff (not like that!)

I wonder what I'd be interested in at 16 (not like that!). I liked reading, video games and movies. I also used to play rugby (and was ok at it). I think I'd need something like Pokemon Go to get me out the house for my state-mandated exercise. My village growing up wasn't very interesting but maybe I could instagram some areas.

If me now could speak to the 16 year old reverend I'd be suggesting getting into coding. I know thats where the money is career wise so thats where I'd want younger me to go.

oh. And I loved making victoria sponge cakes when I was that age and wished I'd have gotten into 'bread' so I'd encourage me to do that.

Finally I'd suggesting talking to her about it and then going with what she suggests. Tell her there are no 'wrong' suggestions but looking after her mental health is as important as looking after her physical health.

Bonus Idea. 16 years old is old enough to ride a moped. Check on ebay for a cheapy fixer-upper and spend a bit of parent/child time doing something together that she can enjoy more freedom when the rules are more relaxed. (I'd have loved something like this with my mum/dad)

:)

My grandson is younger but he has been playing his father's old computer games. He likes Sonic the hedgehog. Sixteen must be a difficult age to cope without seeing your friends.

Sonic The Hedgehog - a classic game that will never get boring.

She’s fine now thanks. She likes colouring books with animals in. She’s been doing her nails a lot too, and making presents for her friends. She has now started seeing her best friend now at a distance outside. When I posted this we were in lockdown so she couldn’t see her friends. Also she was very quiet and in her room all the time.

She’s back to her normal self now. I think it just took her a while to adjust. All that effort revising for her exams. She had just got her prom dress. Then none of it’s happening.

I'm glad to hear.

Revision isn't wasted. Getting that knowledge in the old noggin is well worthwhile.

And having a prom dress just means she has a kick-ass dress to do cool things like photographing stuff and being amazing.

I hope you are still getting to enjoy your walks with her.

:)

Thanks,

The Reverend

Absolutely. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to identify an Isosceles triangle or describe the results of a neutralisation reaction as an adult.

But you could identify an Isosceles triangle though? thats why education is great.

Knowledge is built upon knowledge.
