I had my second interview for this job today, just waiting to hear if I get offered it or not, thought I would share in case anyone else is interested in applying for it. In the ad it says you need recruitment experience but I haven't got any, you would need experience of working in a sales role to apply though, ideally business to business sales. Keep your fingers crossed for me, I'll let you know if they offer it to me...

Its for a recruitment consultant but instead of being based at a high street recruitment agency it is all internet based with all the consultants working from their own home offices. There's quite a few recruitment agencies who work like this all from virtual offices nowadays apparently. Also travel agents are using this as a business model more and more too.

They said at the interview that say if a high street recruitment agency is recruiting for a job with an annual salary of £20,000 they will charge the client 10% so £2000, being internet based which massively cuts overheads they only charge half of that and the company keeps half and I would get half. So if I could get just one person a month into a job on a salary of £20 k I would earn £500 which i would be more than happy with to start off with. I was interviewed by both directors of the company, they are a fairly new company just starting out so I would be getting in at the start so there would be the potential to progress to management. They said they would help me as much as I needed with all the back office stuff like getting to grips with the software, writing job ads and so on, but the sales side, actually finding the clients, they said you either have it or you don't and they can't really teach it.I really hope iI get it, they were all over me like a rash on the first interview but on the second one they were umming and ahhing a bit saying well were not sure because really we are looking for someone with recruitment experience....so just have to wait and see! I do feel like I've lost my way a bit career wise since I gave up my Avon sales leader position - only just over a year ago but it feels like a lifetime ago! :D - and this would be an opportunity to hopefully get back on track

Interesting..

So what is the annual salary they are giving you with this role then?

How do you go about finding job opportunities that you can fill?

A lot of companies have a preferred supplier list which you wouldn't be on so maybe you would want to stay with much smaller companies.

No annual salary its commission only. But I can see it leading on to salaried roles with other companies in the future once I am able to return to full time hours and give a job my full attention. The downside of a salary in sales jobs is the commission won't be as generous and sometimes is capped but it does give you more financial security knowing you've got a certain amount of money definitely coming in each month.with commission only sales jobs the earnings potential is usually higher but you dont have the financial security so its more risky. Because this one is commission only I told them I would only be able to give them mornings in the first instance, I won't be giving up my job at the school for them. I thought it was best to be honest with them and if they want me on board great and if not, on to the next thing.

As far as finding the clients goes its through contacts, networking, cold calling companies, the usual stuff..they said start with what you know so for me that would be secretarial, retail and sales, so there's plenty of scope there. Apparently they have one guy working for them who's background is in catering and hospitality and he's doing really well at finding lots of new clients

I used to work in recruitment and things like this pop up all the time. Recruitment is incredibly tough even for the very best consultants with long term clients, it's about as cut-throat as it gets. I don't see what Refill offer that thousands of agencies offer already, so it's just another run of the mill company in a crowded market place not putting their money where their mouth is and paying people to do the job. You are looking at probably making 100 calls to get even a sniff of a vacancy and there's no guarantee that they aren't using other agencies at the same time. Factor in the time (and cost?) of advertising the vacancy, going through the inevitable hundreds of CVs you'll get and there's a lot of work involved. Then there are the clients that don't pay on time or at all...

Regarding the 50% of the revenue you generate, that's a poor deal. There are respectable companies who offer recruitment agency startup services offering much better than that, take a look at http://www.hiltonlord.co.uk/.

The website that Refill have was only registered in February this year, and I note from the description of the job that no mention was made of claw back. If you place a candidate and they leave within 3 months, then the client is entitled to a percentage of the fee back, so your profit can be wiped out pretty quick.

Recruitment agencies in my opinion are on the decline anyway, more and more people are using services such as https://www.recruitmentgenius.com/ who offer a flat fee recruitment service for £199. They have a £100 payment for each person you introduce, you might make more money doing that: https://www.recruitmentgenius.com/Account/AffiliateSignup.

No cost to me as I understand it of actually paying to advertise the vacancies, I think they pay for that? I don't like the sound of claw back of your commission - they used to do that to us at Avon and you could end up doing an awful lot of work for very little money. I'm getting the impression they don't want me for this job anyway seeing as they haven't come back to me. I'll have a look at the affiliate scheme you suggested Scott, thanks :)

Would you not have to advertise for the role though

Company X comes to you. they want a new secretary

you go on Gumtree and advertise that role. You go on Reed and you advertise that role. Both those companies are going to want money for putting those adverts up

Have I got that wrong?

As I understood it from what they said at the interviews you write the ad and then they have some system you use which places the ad on all the job boards so you don't have to go individually to each one
