Do you work in a quiet room or like me, on the sofa with the TV on?

I suppose one of the biggest pluses to earning from home is that you can do it anywhere as long as you have an Internet Connection.

Some people might have their own little office or 3rd bedroom but to be honest, I haven't had a desktop computer in many many MANY years and so I just turn the laptop on anywhere I want and start earning.

I am used to background noise like people talking or the TV being on so it doesn't distract me.

What works well for you?

My desk is in the living room next to the telly, dog stretched out at my feet, and with a view overlooking my veggie garden and bird table. Heaven! But I do get distracted easily. Today I was watching the neighbour's cat stalking a blackbird. The birds are wise round here though - I think they deliberately taunt him!

I have quite a large bedroom and limited floor space downstairs (due to all the toys and random toddler stuff) so use a corner of my bedroom for my desk and my desktop computer. My partner has a netbook but takes it to work and I much prefer to sit at a desk anyway,

I normally like quiet when writing but occasionally blast some music if I need to get motivated.

Do you think you can be more disciplined if you have to go upstairs to a separate room eg it's 9am so I'm off to work?

I tell you what else has changed over the years.

Mobile devices

I can do a LOT of things on my iPad - Manage this forum etc but I use QuickThoughts on the iPad which pays out in ITunes vouchers (which in turn get used to fund my Netflix Subscription)

I'd love to have a spare room to use as an office. At the moment I use a laptop so move to where in the house I want to be! Usually the living room or dining room. I find I get more done in the dining room as we don't have a TV in there.. also its a better working position sitting up in a proper chair rather than slouched on the sofa.

Some of my best work has been done slouched on the sofa ;)

I've got a desk in our bedroom. It's a bit cramped but it works ok. I get a lot on interruptions from my daughter or my husband or the dogs and cats kicking off.

Dogs can be the root of all evil for distractions.

Especially when they want to be let out lol

As I work full time from home and have been for five years, your environment is crucial for performance and how you feel about the area your work in. I use the back bedroom which has my computer desk, laptop and all my files. We have a newish arrival and we're hoping to buy a three bedroomed house in the next couple of years, so that I can have a dedicated office room for my online duties.

I'm really fed up with two aspects of my environment, well actually one is a tool. I'm fed up with office chair as it's way too low for me and for some reason drops a notch slowly while your in it. I get, hands, wrists, arms, shoulder, back, knees and leg ache because of it. The other is my PC which is steam powered lol. It seriously needs upgrading, it can't cope with too many tasks at once. It's frustating as I want to get on with some work, but often find I can't.

I did work in the living room, but decided there are too many distractions and temptations to turn on the TV. So now my Kitchen table is my office which is rather apt as the three young mums who started Phoenix Trading ran the business from a kitchen table!

It's important to have a proper computer chair if you're planning on sitting on it for long periods. I invested in a good executive chair a couple of years back and what a difference it makes. Your PC/laptop is another area that should be addressed, as this is the main tool for your online work and making money, so having a reliable piece of equipment which operates quick and fast is essential.

Mmm... I sit in the kitchen on my Laptop with no TV or music om. The dog is a bit of a tinker. He will sleep for hours and then has hours of constantly telling me he wants to go out. I open the door to let him out and he just stands and stars at me as if I am the one who has gone bonkers!! Gggrrrrrr

I get easily distracted and often find a thought coming in to my head and then I nip onto 'google' to have a little look and before I know it an hour or so has passed and the work I had to do is still sitting there.

On other days I am so focused....wish I could strike a happy medium and be more disciplined.

I would still rather work at home than in an office somewhere :D

Thanks. Unfortunately it's a shame, but there's no money for anything at the moment. DH will upgrade my PC as soon as is possible, but there isn't anything spare at all.
