I've recently written a post and I'd love to have a discussion here about it and the topic I'm talking about:

https://katykicker.com/how-much-do-you-really-win-on-premium-bonds/

I held my bonds for 6 months (Still got them) and won £450...

Anyone else here who holds 50k? If so, would you share what you won in 6 months, or a year? Was it in line with the 1.15% or 1.40% even that it now is?

I'd love to know and know others enjoy this type of conversation as my post has been pretty popular!

You've had a good run! I put 30K in when that was the max about 7 years ago and got on average £50 a month (usually a couple of £25 wins). When the rates change there was definitely a change the win pattern. Max holdings do better than small holdings obviously but do watch out for interest rate changes. Premium bonds are a nice little tax-efficient way of saving large sums. Also if you buy the bonds in your child's name, it falls outside of your estate when you pass away.

I like looking at the winners list and seeing someone who holds barely any bonds scooping a massive win.

I've got £300 worth and only had one win (£25) in about 5 years. Still keeping them in there in case of the big win...

I would buy more premium bonds but I'm putting my money into paying my mortgage off. I have thought of buying £100 PB for every £1k I pay extra off my mortgage.

The thing that kills premium bonds the most is inflation. Average prize rate is supposed to be 1.4% and inflation is around 3%, so even if you are winning the supposed average amount you are losing money to inflation. The odds of winning the big prizes are just as astronomical as with the lottery.

The green site make a good point about premium bonds. And I'm quoting here, "The most powerful psychological selling point of Premium Bonds is that interest is called winning. I often hear excited comments such as: "My friend wins £25 every few months!" Yet someone with £10,000 worth of bonds should win £100+ a year – that's £25 every few months. The same money in Tesco savings would "win" £178 a year, guaranteed. The win effect means people remember the good months. Take a look and calculate what you're actually winning to see how it'd compare with top savings – and how good your luck has been."

I sold mine having never won a penny in 30 years.

I've won £25 twice since 2010. Not worth it at all.

Its definitely a numbers game. The more you have, the better chances of a win. I have £35K, but even at that amount, I didn't win anything this month. But last month I won £125. I see premium bonds as a bit of fun, rather than an investment. If I win, brilliant, if not, there's always next month :)

Mind you, I was a bit miffed that him indoors and my daughter, who both have far less than I do both won £25 this month ;)

I've had premium bonds for the last 8 years. At the start I didn't win a penny but as I invested more, the wins became more regular. At present I have just over £40k of bonds. Most months I win £25. Some months I can win £100 others months nothing but spread throughout the year, I average about £25 per month in winnings. I know it's maybe not the best return on that sum of money but I like how there is a small chance of winning a life-changing sum of money. It's money I tend to forget about and it's nice to let it grow slightly. I am less inclined to spend it if I forget about it!
