Would be lovely if you could all drop some hints and tips here (I know it's not an exact science and some gubs may be inevitable...) as I am becoming paranoid about being gubbed already... p'raps I overthink things :|

To get the ball rolling, a question!

After a long-ish odds free bet came in (hooray right :| ) I need to top up my betfair but I'm also over £100 up on a bookie website - only ever deposited £15 and most of the profit from a free bet...

For account longevity would it be better to "gamble" it away to get it back to betfair? Or am I safe to withdraw?

There’s a “keeping your accounts open” guide on PA that’s pretty extensive, am sure oddsmonkey has similar if you use them

Basically don’t be seen to be taking the mick with endless bonus hunting so flip in some mug bets (yes you lay them off!) on normal sporting events and you should be fine

Yeah, can't say I'm that enamored with OMs "community area" tbh...

I been on vb boards since I was a little nipper I don't really like anything else so me being prejudiced really! XD

With reference to another post of yours i replied to today I'm guessing it would be wise to mug punt (and hopefully lose!) on a bunch of horses in the run up to cheltenham?

Also how close a match do you look for mug betting? Surely if all your mug bets are too well matched that's a warning sign too...

I just use saturday ITV races as my racing yard stick and use PA Match Catcher which gives me Qualifying Loss of a few pence on my mug bets...

As long as I'm not taking arbs and i'm betting on maybe 1st,2nd,3rd favourite they seem to be happy ;)

Well everyone has their own theories about gubbings and their own ideas and strategies on how to avoid them, ranging from refraining from horse betting to reciting incantations and spreading a protective circle of salt around them before betting.

My advice is this:

Never bet on the early morning increased Piecewise odds.
Don't bet on weird and and unusual leagues and sports.
If you normally make £20 bets don't suddenly slap £200 on when there's a boost.
Don't use free bets on high odds (for me that's anything above 8 but some people play safe and keep them lower than that)
Don't only do offers. Mix it up a bit: Some offers, some boosts, some accas, some mug bets.
Stick a quid in the casino every so often.
If doing a free bet club that pays a free bet for 5 qualifying bets, don't only make 5 bets every week.

thanks for the tips!

think i just need to chill out a bit and not do anything too drastic. Dont need to drain the bookie balance straight away couple mug bets occaisionally and a qualifying bet or two and it'll go down on its own!

Gotta take a step back and realise it's all free money so it's all gravy really. When you first start though it starts to feel like you're watching money float past without grabbing it if you arent taking full advantage!

Gotta be honest, i dont believe there is a way to stop or BE gubbed, i have accounts that i mug, got gubbed, accounts that i take every freebie going and never mug...dont get gubbed... I had Bet 365 for instance... did mugs, did some but not all offers, was gubbed within 3 months, reopened one in my wife's name been doing same (in fact probably taking MORE of the offers than on old account) not gubbed, in fact been getting higher better value offers that i never got on my old account... i reckon there is no theory to gubbing

I agree there is probably no strict theory but I just don’t get why a bookie would keep your account open if you are only active when taking offers lol

Probably because the account has been profiled by a trader and they're happy to accept liabilities. Surely some people open an account for the world cup/Olympics/Grand National etc and just bet on that just as a mug punter would do. Contrast to a matched bettor taking 95-98% matches on the same selections as thousands of other people.

But hey its a mystery. Who the heck know what they're thinking!

I agree there as far as getting gubbed goes. I have regularly mug betted alongside offers and got gubbed then other accounts where I do offers and only do maybe one mug bet in between and the account is fine no problems at all.
Now I just don’t worry about it. I just do an offer then maybe one extra bet on a high profile football match and that is it.
I do choose matches where there is lots of liquidity in that market rather than just going for something because it is the closest match showing up on the oddsmatcher.

I also think there is no way to completely avoid being gubbed, however, I often take poorer value matches and try to avoid near matches unless it is a very big game. I ignore close match threads as think everyone jumping on a match at the same time looks suspicious. Avoid doing every price boosts, and do some price boosts that offer no value. On accounts I regularly get free bets I sometimes take poor value from them too or place them on something that can't be layed. Oddly most I have been gubbed from have not been heavily abused and many hardly even used. I think Skybet was the only one that was probably used often.
