As someone that has moved around the UK quite a few times and had to 'start again' many times I find it goes one of two ways for people

If you move somewhere and you start working then it goes well. You increase your social group through work and get introduced to other bits and bobs that may interest you. Work nights out, oh YOU like the theatre as well! We should go! etc...

If you move somewhere but fail to get work and you end up sitting at home everyday alone you WILL feel cut off no matter where you live. You will then go through the 'rose coloured glasses' phase where you forget why you wanted to leave your original city in the first place and long to go back. Homesickness might also be a part of this if again, you are sat at home everyday with no social group and no company to bond to.
Have you had to move many times? Also are they all up north or have you lived in London?

My dad moved us around the uk a lot as kids as he worked on contracts. I've also had stints living abroad Italy I loved, France I didn't, Romania I loved but culturally it was very different from the UK in a way that France and Italy aren't I suppose its the difference between western and eastern European culture

Actually its really easy to build your support network as a new mum its like when you get a dog and suddenly every other dog owner wants to know you! Its the same with babies :D

Are things better for you and your partner now Fivecats or are you still looking for better paid jobs?

We have both headed back in the direction of more education, Sparkleandshine! I'm lucky enough to be on a PhD studentship (equivalent to a smallish salary, but tax-free) and my partner's doing a part-time Masters and working part-time. If any affordable/funded study options come your way and if you can stand further study, I'd definitely recommend it as a way of developing fresh skills and contacts while continuing to work out what to do longer term. I hope things improve for you soon :)

Old thread but anyway, in my opinion if you feel that you want to change the city or country where you live then you should not hesitate because the soul feels better where it belongs.
I also had such a period and at first, I was afraid to make changes and then I decided not to hesitate and I moved to the USA.
Of course, life here is a bit expensive, but it's worth it. Everything is beautiful and I really enjoy being here.
If anyone is interested in the cost of living in the USA then you can enter the link.

Possibly, I guess it depends on where you want to move to and what you need to prepare for legally before entering the country.

Been contemplating relocating myself recently but then I figured the grass isn't always greener. U.S has their various problems, and I don't see other EU countries as much better. I think it just boils down to living within means and cutting back for financed.

Nowhere in the world looks comfortable to live in at the moment with this pandemic and various other issues.
