It's not just online money, it's many things in life. I think people do tend to go in circles, perhaps believing lightning/luck will strike, rather than researching and making a few intelligent decisions that could (with appropriate effort) change things.

Research is the most important thing though, you can't decide on what you don't know. I have to admit I never did any surveys, turking or other stuff that often pays dismally at first, and I got a bit lucky in stumbling across reasonably paid work at the beginning. But someone who took time to research and read forums such as this could do the same.

You did well not to start with the survey/swagbucks level

I suppose you are right, others may get the same if they are at the right place at the right time. There are people on here who I helped get into 63336 when the floodgates opened and are now earning £100's a month from it. Right Place, Right Time, Right Community. For all I know this might have been their first experience with earning online from home.

Thing is, I am happy for them. I get nothing at all from referring people to opportunities. I am always posting on here with Field Agent or Roamler jobs come up. Or if there are online focus groups that people can apply for. I think that's what we need to see more of and then people could start a little higher up the food chain maybe.

Just out of interest what did you start with then that was quite high paying?

It sounds awful, but I don’t help people as much as I used too. Someone PMs me on the green site or I PM them after reading a post. They talk about how desperate they are for work. Then I find they want completely spoon feeding through the whole process. After a few posts back and forth they realise its too much effort for them, so then I conclude they can’t be that desperate after all. Been working from home since 2007 and never not been able to earn some kind of income from home in all that time.

I completely agree with this. I post now and again on the self-employment, working for yourself boards over on Netmums and although there are a few people who are determined to make things work, put in the effort and really give it their all, there is also a massive number of people who want something for nothing. They basically want all the perks of a salaried, employed position like sick pay, maternity leave and holiday pay, and want to work 10am to 2pm Monday to Friday, term time only, doing a well paid job which doesn't require any qualifications, expertise or training.

Some of them get quite rude when I point out they're living in cloud cuckoo land ;-)

I think you are right in that people's expectations are way out of whack

There is very much still an element of "working your way up" with all this much like any normal job. It might take 6 months or longer until you get exposed to a higher paying method of earning money online.

Agree with this too - I cut my teeth doing the rubbish mystery shops and the writing for $4 per 500 words until I had enough of a portfolio and experience to move on to other things. You wouldn't expect to join a company as CEO and it's the same with working at home.

This is what I was told when I posted, I received quite a few pm's one for juices, make up (I sold avon 20 years ago and did not want to go down that route again)body wraps, natural body care oh and not forgetting the books.

Im not scared of hard work or having a low hourly rate as being self employed it does happen (can have a fantastic rate as well, just depends on the flow of work) but I didnt want to go into the selling route and party plans .

Best pm I did get over there was for this site :D

I am still learning loads from here and the best thing is everyone here are helpful and honest :D

A lot of the "mums" who use these sorts of sites get on OK with direct selling but know that the key is recruiting others. Reps for Juice plus, Wikaniko and Usborne Books are the most aggressive recruiters.

Good post. I agree. Start at the bottom with low paying jobs, do your research and when a better opportunity comes along then put the work in. This forum is great, there's so much information and you (Jon) have shown everyone the realities of working online or working from home. I saw this forum and thought "if he can do it, so can I"... I've not quite made it yet but I feel confident I will

They certainly seem to be. Everything seems to be happy and clappy if you join up but I imagine the pressure to attend cake sales and sell their stuff and get signs up is much more than they let on.

The realities are a big factor in anything. I (and many others) have had the rug pulled out from under them before when companies have gone bust or revenue streams dry up out of nowhere..

I learn as much as others when new ideas/concepts/methods/companies are bought to be site so being open to anything is always important I find.
