Most people who have a website hosted will be aware of CPanel. Some hosting companies have their own 'built in' control panel for organising your hosting but cPanel is used a LOT. GoDaddy have a built in one and make you pay extra for CPanel. The advantage for a lot of people who go self hosted and use cpanel is that its easy to then migrate from one hosting company to another.

However, at the beginning of July the company behind cPanel announced a big change to how much they charge web hosting companies to use the software.

cPanel Solo, at $15/month, cPanel and WHM VPS at $20/month (or $200/year), or a dedicated version aimed at larger web hosts for $45/month or $425/year.
The tiers have now been renamed to Admin, Pro and Premier (at $20, $30 and $45/month respectively) but - and this is what has really enraged customers -an account limit has been applied. The top level, Premier, is limited to 100 accounts. Additional accounts will require an extra $0.20/month each.

So these additional costs are no doubt going to be passed onto the Customers. Last year I Was seeing hosting companies offering silly $1 a month for hosting type deals but I just don't get how the days of these sort of offers are going to keep going of hosting companies are having to shell out more for the software they license.

Something to think about anyway when we all see our hosting costs go up over the next 6 months lol

Well since Sunday I've been looking at various hosting providers out there as my sites have outgrown my current tariff and the price to upgrade to the next tier (more memory, more bandwidth) is pretty harsh so I've been looking around. To be fair I should have sorted this a while ago but I've been waiting for a few things to be in place first (forum upgrade, amazon discount finder etc.)

Trying to find medium-sized UK hosting companies that don't charge the earth isn't as easy as it was even 3-4 years ago!

I know you can pay pennies but you get peanuts. Those companies offering website hosting for like £6 a month (20p a day!) just have so low limits on there that you will forever be slowing down to worse still showing errors about resources being reached.

I dread to think what renewal prices are going to be over the next year..
