Feeling like a proper grown up as I have arranged a meeting with an independent financial adviser *eek* Will be getting advice on pensions, investments, life insurance.

Has anyone got experience of working with a financial adviser before?

I don't, but after I get married in May we are going to see one. Let us know how it goes!

Will do! I'm quite excited about it (how sad is that!)

A few things have happened that have made me decide tat I needed to get all our finances in ship-shape condition. Two uncles passed away in 2014 and both left their estates in a mess in different ways. One who had loads of money but his will was all over the place and has caused no end of problems and upset. The other overspent all of his life and had no real 'grasp' of money and had to to release all the equity in his house just for living costs.

Then I got run over  and it made me realise how quickly things can change! Luckily I was okay, but I could have been killed and in that situation I need to know that I have left my family in the best possible situation without me.

I use a pensions adviser - its a friend of a friend so she does not charge me and does give bits of advice about other areas. As long as you are honest with them about what you have, what you want for the future and how much you need to live on they should give some great advice.

There's a lot of free information and calculators around these days.

I research things myself that I don't understand as a result of my own life experiences with good and bad advisers. If you are going to speak with an advisor do some research first and go armed so you can make best use of your time with them.
