Hi,

Wasn't sure where to post this. I am wondering, if you register as self employed when earning money in other ways apart from employment, are you then officially running a business from home? If so, what impact would that have on things like mortgage or home insurance? Would you need to tell someone regardless of what you are doing to earn the extra money?

Cheers.

You wouldn’t be running a business you would be self employed

So you are self employed and working for appen

Self employed and working for utest

Self employed and doing work via bemyeye
Etc

If you were a blogger and running your websites full time from home and that’s was a “business” then yes you would be “running a business from home”

But you wouldn’t have any stock so there is nothing to insure

Full time eBay reseller with stock might be different kettle of fish

Many thanks for the quick reply, wondering about flogging stuff on Amazon but with quick turnaround of items - eg buy clearance stuff from a shop and send off pretty quickly.

Cheers

Hi Dazza,

Amazon selling was popular last year but I don't hear so much from the few reseller people I follow. I think it is easy to lose a lot of cash in storage fees at Amazon.

You need to speak to your own home insurer about this. Different insurers have different views on what makes a change to your insurance. As a typical guideline working from home doesn't mean higher insurance, unless you were having people visit your 'business premises'. But always speak to your own insurer about this.

I currently work for an insurance company (although not for much longer!) and generally we would want to know if someone was working from home or had a home business for a few reasons.
1. are you going to be in the home more than usual?
2. do you have business equipment?
3. do you have stock?

If you are working from home in your normal down time and are not at home more than you usually would be and don't have any stock or business equipment we would not expect to be told. However, as katykicker said, each insurer is different and if you have concerns is it best to check than have a claim declined or cover voided.
