Hi everyone,

So I’ve been making money online for a couple of months now and I’ve mainly been using my phone or my PC at home. Problem is it’s my Dad’s PC and he uses it a lot so at certain points of the day I can’t do anything and I know I could be earning more. So I need a laptop!

Just interested to hear your opinions on which kind of laptop I should get? I’ve had Windows laptops before and I’m not really a fan, they end up being slow in my experience and crash and get viruses, etc. I’m thinking a MacBook is the best option. Would you agree? Very expensive though but at least I’ll love it. What do you reckon?

I bought my first MacBook in 2015 via the Apple refurb site and it’s still going now and those devices in tough as nails

it’s as fast as it has ever been!
However it does come at a cost, do you know how much you are able to spend?

I’m not too sure at the minute Jon. I don’t know if I should wait until I’ve built up a bit more money first given the way things are at the moment and the fact that I’ve handed in my notice at work. I was doing fine when I had things like Roamler and BeMyEye to do but I’m only really making money on Neevo and survey sites at the minute so I could do with holding on to everything I’ve made so far for the time being until I can spare £1,000. I’ve got some temporary work with the Royal Mail next month so I might see how much I pick up from that.

It might be worth looking at a corporate refurb laptop.

I got a Lenovo T240 (6GB RAM SSD) with 12 months warranty for around £140 from itzoo.

I'm typing on it now, the battery life can be poor when not charged, but it's great other than that. I don't see the need to spend £100s on a laptop when starting out.

What about a cheap gaming pc? Faster than a lap top and lets you do gaming beta tests for lionbridge.
I've done 6 since the beginning of Feb for a total of $160 (10 hours playing games and an hour or so doing feedback forms).

There are 3 more scheduled atm - 2 next week (Tue & Thu) and one mid April for another $80 in total.

Only started in Feb so not sure if there are usually this many tests about but you need a i5 or better with at least a 7800 2gb graphics card and windows 8 or 10 (might be windows 7 but hey ho it won't let me reopen the from and check).

*edit* found the full spec weeee:

64bit Windows PCs (Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1, Win 10).
CPU: Intel i5-3570 / AMD FX-6300
GPU: GTX 660/ATI Radeon HD 7850 2 GB of GPU VRAM
Hard Disk: 7200 rpm HDD 15 GB of available hard-disk space
Memory: 8 GB
OS: Windows 7 64 bit - dx11

Tests are usually 4pm or 5pm.

I just picked one up a week ago, my first desktop computer, so far so good, it was actually cheaper than a non-gaming PC so that's why I got it, it has an upgraded graphics card, a 'gaming keyboard' and all the rest but I don't intend on playing a single game funnily enough, I only bought it so I could take my trading to the next level. Back when I used to play games it was always on a console, PS3 is the last one I had but it's been years since I turned that on.

Anyway just commented to say to OP that yes I too have a gaming PC and it outperforms both of my laptops quite easily (cost less too)

The chance would be a fine thing lol, I’m still waiting for Lionbridge to get in touch after they said I’d passed.

Also maybe consider open boxes (new items that have had their boxes open but unused. In Jan 2016, I got an Acer Aspire V Nitro (Core i5, GTX 860M, 12GB RAM, 1TB HDD + 60GB SSD, 1080p IPS panel) the same as this:1585668201939.png

for £500, around £200 less than "new". All because the box was open and they had to brown tape it back up again. Inside though, it was untouched. The laptop was still sealed in its original sleeve, it still had the foam sheet protecting the screen etc.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve really got my heart set on a MacBook Pro. But I can’t justify it at the moment since I’ve the only things I would use it for at the moment to make money is Prolific and SerpClix, and that’s not enough. Maybe I’d be able to do Testing Time or User Testing, but I don’t know how much I’d be able to earn from those having never used them. I suppose I could make more from Neevo if I had the laptop as I’d be able to work on it at the times where my dad is always on our PC from like 7-9pm. Maybe if I eventually get some work on Lionbridge or Appen it will be more worthwhile. I just don’t want to spend £1,200 and then be making a pound from Prolific and $0.50 from SerpClix per day.

Don’t suppose anyone knows anywhere where I can get good cash back from buying a Mac? I’ve looked on Topcashback but Currys is only 0.5%, John Lewis I think was 2% but the Mac is out of stock and Argos don’t give cashback.

I don’t worry about antivirus.

My MacBook advice would be set up an ‘Admin’ account and a ‘User’ account. And only log into the ‘User’ account.

This makes it harder for malware to install as you will get notifications whenever anything tries to install, which you’ll find is rare due to everything being done ‘on the web’ now :)

mid 2014 MacBook Pro user here.

:)

Nah you don’t

also give yourself time to accept the different ways you do things on a Mac instead of becoming frustrated by them lol

I’m sure I’ll love it. I love Apple and not a fan of Windows.

Even if you have an account with admin rights, on a Mac you'll still need to re-enter your password to install software etc. Been like that since way back when with all Mac OS X versions since 20 years ago.

It took a while for Windows to catch up - though admittedly with windows if your account has admin privileges its just a yes / no choice to elevate to full administrator privileges rather than having to retype your password.

Having said that what The Reverend says is still sound advice whatever platform you are using (but bear in mind that Windows 10 home versions make this less easy as you've really got to jump through hoops to use a 'local' account not tied to a Microsoft account.)
