Is it fair to say the high street is done for now then?

Those 'out of town' retail parks are ALL the same now, aren't they!

Costa
Petsathome
HomeBargains / B&M
M&S Food
JD Sports
Argos
Asda Home

You can put money on at least 50% of those stores being in the retail park lol
Yes! This is so true, our “retail parks” are literally a 10 min drive from each other, how do Poundland (and other stores) manage to turn a profit when they have 3 stores all within 10-15 mins of each other? It’s always baffled me that!!

I just want it to be 1982 again. Falklands war and Miners strike excepted.

Our Price records
Snickers are still called Marathon bars
finding out for the first time Vader is Luke's father
Atari 2600
Tron is cutting edge CGI

etc.....

if you want me, I'm just popping into Woolworths for some pick n mix.

be careful what you wish for... Morrisons are selling snickers as Marathon's for a limited period!

This is a good example of things going down the pan

went to Barclays yesterday as we wanted to make a change to one of our accounts.
in the big Barclays in Leeds city centre they have replaced all the humans with touch screen machines downstairs and upstairs you can see a few people so up we go

and then get told we can’t just wait to speak to someone and instead need to make an appointment HOWEVER if we pop back in 2 hours or so it may be quieter and they can see us.

we come back two hours later and there is a barrier up stopping anyone from going upstairs!!!!!?!?!!?

The town I live in when I was younger had 100s of shops and pubs/clubs and market place that was always full.. Now there is next to no shops alot of charity shops, bookies and hair dresser/ barbers. I would love to see my old town resurrected as it was a great place. Online shopping and the high rent costs seems to have stopped any hope of this happening but you never know in the future. More and more people seem to want the old ways to come back.

Is anyone going to miss Mothercare? Did they offer anything that you couldn't get online or from another department store?

it doesn't surprise me. If you put expensive prams in the 'baby' section of John Lewis you can at least use it as a loss leader.

Mothercare was overly expensive and they well just getting left in dust when it came to their online side of things

That mixed in with having to pay business rents is just the last nail in the coffin

A lot of the shops that are going under and ones who still think people are buying things like its 1995

One sentence from a related article which sums up why the highstreet (and this country) is going down the pan:

"Although the first half of this year saw a net decline of 1,234 chain stores on British High Streets, there were some bright spots. Takeaways, gyms and specialist vaping shops were some categories that saw the largest increases in store openings."

You know, those 3 vital cornerstones of the economy.

Where I'm based it's basically estate agents, fast food shops, charity shops, pubs, and bookies.

People always moaning that the town centre's in decline, but IMO surely there's more to life than mooching around the shops and spending ££?

Seems people are being urged to spend all their Mothercare gift cards at the moment.

I saw the toy sector is also having it tough at the moment and seems to be banking on Christmas to save everything!

I honestly think there will be some more casualties come Jan / Feb next year

Where I am right now (well....my nearest town of size as there is all of one corner shop in the village ;) ) seems to actually be surviving quite well. There's a combination of chains and independents but on the whole they've been fairly stable over the years. There is a department store which has a troubled status though. The town draws from a largely affluent population, and I would guess an older than average demographic which possibly supports a stronger high-street mentality than younger on-line generations? Head into some other towns, or the city and it's a very different story.

Moving on friday though!
