Is it time to start being realistic when it comes to money making apps?

Roamler / Field Agent / StreetSpotr / Click & Walk etc.

REAL money making apps come in all shapes and sizes but generally require one thing of you. To go to the location of the task, the tasks don't come to you.

Quite a few people seem to sign up to use these apps and earn money but don't seem to be willing (or maybe they can't) put in the mileage to do the tasks.

I agree they are far easier to do if you can 'loop' tasks, Field Agent style and knock 5/6 jobs on the head one after another. If you are driving from supermarket to supermarket one after another I think you are going to struggle to justify the time + expense.

I think if you are going to get into these money making apps you need to be accept that more often than not you WILL need to travel. The 'there are no tasks near me!' line that I see often is maybe skewing the facts that there are jobs nearby it's just that maybe you can't get to them. OR that there are actually no jobs nearby but because of the dynamic nature of this work there may be tomorrow, or next week. I suppose what I am saying in if you are wanting to get the most of these apps you need to be in them for the long haul!

Money making apps are great although they do require a lot of effort on the user's part in order to make a hefty chunk of money from them.

I'm lucky enough to live very close to where hundreds of these tasks appear each month, and can often go out and make over £100 in one day with ease. Others aren't as lucky, however, and will have to travel to be able to make that type of money.

I think there are two types of money making app users. The first, like me, live close enough to tasks to be able to consider apps like FA to be a decent side income. Others, live further away, and will be happy to be able to make £3-5 every now and then when they're at the supermarket.

I think you're right - it is about being realistic. If you live in an area that doesn't tend to receive many tasks, you're going to have to travel to make any significant money with these apps. Having said that, it might not always be worth it. My partner and I, for instance, will be out at first light to mop up as many tasks as possible in our area, and I'm sure there are many others doing this, too. Unless you're really committed and willing to travel very early in the morning, you're unlikely to compete with dedicated Field Agents etc.

I think it depends on how important it is as a stream of income for you. I have given up on Roamler because I couldn't devote the time to travelling. Even if I could do 6 visits in two hours including travelling time between them at £2 a visit, that's still only £6 an hour and you've not taken petrol into account. I can earn more than that doing other things, and things which don't cost me anything in petrol or bus fares.

It does pay to be strategic about these things though, and I used to plan mystery shopping in that way. If I was traveling to a shopping centre for one client I'd see if there were other visits I could schedule at the same time, or with a small diversion on the way there or back. Most mystery shopping clients have a greater degree of flexibility over when you do them though unlike the apps where it's "do it now or it's gone".

If you live in a large city then yes you probably could make a day of it travelling around and snapping up the jobs, but in a rural area there just isn't enough work within travelling distance.

I'm lucky if there's one task I can accept every week, usually a mushroom or cucumber one. It's only feasible to accept a task like this if it's a store I need to go to anyway or that I'm going to be passing. No-one is going to spend £3 in petrol in order to do a £2 task. My best day has been once managing to do two mushroom checks on the way back from a hospital appointment.

Some interesting observations.

I've signed up to quite a few of these apps over the last couple of weeks (maybe too many) but will refrain from any more. I'll see how the next few weeks go with these apps and what tasks come up or not. If anyone is interested I'm using the following:

Roamler
FieldAgent
OnePulse
Spare5
iPoll
StreetSpotr
VoxPopMe
Clic and Walk

I've crossed out the ones I don't bother with.

Anything that isn't going to pay me at least a couple of quid for a minute or so's work isn't worth my time.

I have no interest in earning money slowly with these things at a rate of 5p a day or something

How can you cross out Voxpopme?? I think it pays the most per minute than any of the rest. Last week I got 4 questions on a wine shops logo. Each paying £1. So £4 for 4 minutes!!! You can't beat that!!! ( well maybe your awesome Mindswarms job).

i use streetspotr and clic and walk but as a newbie i keep seeing mushroom jobs appear in other peoples posts, would someone explain what these are please.

I really like streetspotr in particular and click and walk is fine too but i have had trouble with both these apps with crashes, app stopping which can be quite frustrating

Mushroom tasks are just taking photos of mushroom in select stores and answering a handful of questions. They appear every Monday and flower tasks appear every Thursday

If you are have app issues with Clic and walk / Streetspotr then post on the relevant threads as there are reps on there who can help

I much prefer stuff which doesn't require me to leave the house and go on a special trip. I just don't feel comfortable standing in a supermarket taking pictures of things.

Completely understand if that's how you feel regarding going outside however the rate of pay is ten times + that of doing surveys etc

£5 a time for what is a minutes work x as much work as is on there for you makes more sense to me

To be fair there's lots of high paying work that doesn't involve leaving the house.

A lot of it is mentioned on here and on the toolkit on the blog

I have looked at boh Field Agent and Roamler and nothing has been reasonably close to me. I would be tempted to venture to my local shop or even combine on my route, but the tasks I have seen have been miles away which would require me going totally out of my way. I have a full time job so want this type of stuff to be as easy as possible.

However, I am a member of on device research and sometimes a project may be poster spotting for a couple of weeks and catching a couple of photo's of them, but not mandatory. I have done several of those, but they can be done on my normal day to day travelling to and from work or when out and about without doing anything over and above.

Probably is, but I work full time and have a family life so it has to be balanced up against the inconvenience. Wouldnt be fair to keep dragging the kids along on a jaunt everytime I want to do a task.
