I am having a little difficulty deciding what to do, I have a approx 20 hr a week job that is fairly well paid, but it was taken over by someone recently and the new person in charge, and myself are not getting on so well, I would like out (and I have a gut feeling if I don't get out soon, I will be pushed) but heres the kicker: I have 2 school age kids, no help whatsoever with childcare, so any job must fit around them, any after or before school club is out as they are full. I am not particularly trained in any one thing, but have been self employed, by various means, for 15 years. I have a few side hustles, that with time put into them, could become a full time income, but that isnt going to be instant, I am looking for something part time to work alongside my side hustles but there is very little about when I would prefer not to do care, cleaning or retail.

So option a is keep going as I am while building up my side hustles until I am either let go or have found something that fits with the kids.
Option b quit job and build side hustles full time.
Option c I could make some kind of income through apps, tailster and the like, some field marketing, some other jobs I get offered ad hoc, but wouldnt know what I would be earning from week to week.

Anyone have any advice for me?

What are the side hustles / ideas that you have that could turn BIG TIME if you then have the time to focus on them more?

I've always been a bit risk-averse (hence 30+ years working for the same company before I jumped ship last year) but with kids to consider my preference would definitley be option A.

Then, if you are let go, I'm assuming you would be due some form of severance pay (I don't know the detail though so apologies if that's not the case) which would help plug any gap until you find a new job or the side hustles take off.

I'm sure there will be others who have made a different approach work for them though so whatever you decide I really hope it works out for you.

Side projects - I have been working at print on demand after reading a post on here, have managed to build this up to £250 per month part time - 1 year in, I sell on Redbubble, Amazon Merch, Teepublic etc, any money I get from this I tend to reinvest somewhere. This is my real passion, I love it and would love to go full time but £250 per month isnt going to pay the bills!
I have been trying to build up Amazon FBA through retail arbitrage.
I have a couple of Etsy shops.
I do Amazon KDP.
I have very recently just started a small business as a dog wedding chaperone, part of this is selling accessories for dogs to wear, very niche I know, but this is very new (2 months in) apart from my the print on demand and Etsy (small amount) the rest doesn't make really any money as yet, but I havent had the time to go all in, if you see what I mean.
Unfortunately I am self employed, in a contractor type situation, so no severance or redundancy, any day I could just be told not to come in, there is a option to go totally solo in this business but I dont love it, to me its just a job.

Indeed they do! There are loads of wedding venues around me that allow dogs, lot's of ppl now days want their dogs to be part of the wedding in some way but most people they know will be at the wedding, so this is where a chaperone steps in, I love dogs and have always wanted to work with them.

I suppose it comes down to what is 'well paid'. @Jon 's money making toolkit post shows how to earn £1k a month. Thats £200 a week or about £10 an hour from your 20 hours a week.

If you have no job security, and you are able to grow your side businesses, then I'd say get as much out of your current employer as possible and then quit when you feel it is appropriate. If you are SE with them then it wont matter.

Do what feels right to you.

:)

Thanks,

The Reverend

Thank you for replying, had a look at the tool kit, I already do or have done the majority on there unfortunately, or that could have worked out nicely.

it's tricky isn't it.

If you didn't have the kid then I was would take a punt on being able to grow your side incomes since you are clearly showing they are working at the moment so it's just a case of more time on them will bring you more money!

do you mind me asking how many designs you have up on those sites like RedBubble? I'm guessing it's a fair few

I'm also looking to ramp up the online/side income earning. Respect to those that take the leap, must be so liberating being away from group-think at say a typical office job.

Option A seems the most sensible route - by quitting you limit your options - and "only" working 20 hours a week you should still be able to start persuing the other routes to see if you can get them to take off.
That assumes your not being adversely affected by this working relationship through stress etc. because that could quickly change the equation.

Yeah, nothing can make you hate a job more than a toxic work environment that you then feel trapped in!
