No - I gave up when I didn't know what to write

Oh don't give up. The application form is a time-consuming bum, but it could lead to some decent, steady work.

OH Queen81
This may be the wrong attitude but fill in the application form with flannel and waffle, shrug your shoulders and press send. All you have to loose is time, but as Jenny pointed out you may gain some steady work.

You have to be in it to win it!!!!

I sent off my application and a comically cheery 'have a nice day' type man phoned me within the hour. No one could actually be that happy. No one. He may be less happy, however, by the time I've completed the pre-screen assessment :).

Well what did you put in for the internet references bit?

I didn't put anything as it wasn't compulsory (there was no asterisk beside it) - they are after your personal Facebook/Twitter accounts etc and I don't really use either (on a personal level at least -I use them all the time for 63336 of course), so I left them blank in the hope they think it was for privacy reasons rather than my dislike of those sites. (I ensured the rest of my application emphasised that how much I use the internet in both my working and personal life though.)

So I completed the pre-screen assessment and I'm now onto the qualification process. Apparently starting tomorrow (if I sign the NDA etc - this was emailed to me at 4.35am today and I was called at 7.55am (having not yet even looked at my email today) to see why I hadn't signed it yet!).

I emailed them on Friday to ask if the qualification period was paid (as it takes 30 hours of study and 20 hours of simulated work) and was told this morning, as the original letter stated, I will get an undisclosed bonus if I'm still working with them and in good standing after 8 weeks of live production. I hate replies like that. Yes, I read and understood that before. That's not what I asked (and any such bonus could clearly be held back if they judge me not to be in good standing or they could pay it and make it a whopping £1). So... I'm assuming the qualification process is unpaid. This makes me very very uneasy. Anyone else's thoughts/experience on this?

With Lionbridge (for Ad Assessor role) qualification was unpaid, then I never reached the pass mark. It didn't take as long as they predicted but I reckon I spent about 16 hours on it. It was mind numbing and I got to the point that I had gone past caring, which is probably why I failed!!

Good luck - even though I sound negative.

Thanks. I've got until midday to sign the NDA (this pressure to sign makes me uneasy in itself).

I've decided they'll be getting a polite thanks, but no thanks. I simply cannot afford to devote 50 hours of my time, without pay, to a job which appears to be temporary for most people. (I'll emphasise that should their policy regarding paid training change (highly unlikely) I would be interested. And I'll also ask if there are any other roles available that don't require such lengthy periods of unpaid training.) In short, I think those 50 hours would be much better spent trying to get a lecturing job with the OU or some other role that could lead to long term work.

Could you sign it and give the study material a quick skim and then decide if to proceed? The the green site board has a long thread dedicated to ABH.

Yeah, I considered that, but I don't want to legally tie myself into anything that may prohibit me working for another company (I may well apply to Leapforce, for example, when I have more time, as I understand their process is quicker (though the work less reliable)).

I read through many reviews of Appen's web search evaluator role before I applied and many/most were negative (as a side note - it appears some people were paid for training in the past). However, I've (relatively happily) worked for other companies that have received negative reviews from disgruntled employees so I figured I'd find out for myself. I guess the bottom line is I'm not ready to work for 50 hours for free for a role that's likely to last only a few months.

So now they're withholding training pay for almost two months (btw it would probably be $300, that's what it was a year ago), they've recently cut pay, and they still have that 20 hours of 'simulated work' thing? I commend you for your decision to not go ahead with this application, as I feel from experience that you would be better off at any of the other similar companies. ABH plainly feel like the blame for their recent loss of contracts is down to bad workers, hence all these draconian new measures. They are not a healthy company and they do not treat their workers with respect, despite their friendly facade.
