Is anyone into/has anyone heard of The Law of Attraction or seen the film ‘The Secret’? What are your thoughts?
I first came across it when I did MLM. The industry tend to present it as a motivational, money making technique but there’s much more to it than that. I have 2 friends in particular who are very successful who are definitely in tune with LOA.

Never heard of it but I'm off to google to find out about it now. Already thinking it is going to end up with links to a Scientology website.

Haha! Definitely nothing to do with Scientology!

Not into it then Jon? Lol :)
It's bollocks.

It doesn't surprise me that you first came exposed to it in MLM and it's an easy method to use to recruit people

More reasons for why it is bollocks include

Tony Robins told people to use LOA to walk over burning coal and 21 people got rushed to hospital with burns

The Jodi Arias Trial
She was using the technique to manipulate the Jury so it was exposed...

I think it’s been misused by shady people for sure, for the wrong reasons. People tend to oversimplify it or misunderstand it completely. In its purest form it’s just focusing on what you want and feeling good about it - change your thoughts and you change your life. A positive, focused person will always be more successful.
I’m definitely not an MLM fan though, I’ve been burned before!

Further stuff about why I think it's bollocks.

I got into a 'discussion' online with a HUGE LOA advocate who was saying to someone that they shouldn't worry if they didn't get a job they went for as it was just the 'universe clearing out crap in your life' etc or whatever.

So I piped up and said that's bollocks as I said on the opposite side of the table a lot in Interviews and the Universe has no control as to if myself and 2 other people select someone or a job and if the Universe did then what is the point of the entire application form > interview process.

the LOA said I was being too literal so clearly it was my mistake :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

A lot of new age, spiritual types are all over this and in my opinion are too tied to the idea of ‘letting the universe take care of it’. It’s not that simple. It’s more about learning to master your own thoughts, so consciously choosing one thought over another, to your advantage. A person choosing more helpful thoughts will take more constructive actions in their life.

It’s not for everyone though and I can see from your experiences why you would think it was bollocks. Different strokes for different folks, eh?

at the risk of being controversial, here's my thoughts. I DO think that there is something in the law of attraction BUT I also think that its something that is way over-egged and can have negative consequences.

as a life coach, I have heard pretty much every explanation for LOA and also I have heard everything explained away using LOA. I feel that the way we think/what we think has an effect on our lives, I reckon that's pretty much a no-brainer. But I do also think that being more cheerful and being more open to opportunity we can see positive results. Its really 'nice' to believe that when you didn't get that job, its because the universe has something better for you, but it can also be dangerous... this is part of the reason I am in such a lot of debt at the moment, I totally fell into the LOA trap and was paying people to tell me that if I just thought more positively then I would 'attract' clients. I didn't and I fell into the spiral of this next thing is what will bring me success etc.

Ugh, so I am not a harbinger of doom, I do think if you can 'honestly' feel more positive then everything feels more managable, BUT take care not to get a)suckered into using it as a cop out for everything b) using it as a stick to beat yourself with eg. feeling that anything negative that happens to you is because you aren't 100% posiitve all the time c)beleiving that if you just keep believing then money will come to you, you have to take action.

Hope that all makes sense and doesn't sound too bitter. xx

Thanks for posting, I was hoping to generate discussion about this and sorry to hear about the debts.
Nobody can be 100% positive all the time because sometimes life is hard and shitty, but there are always choices when it comes to how we think and react to situations. In some situations it could be choosing the thought that’s only slightly more positive than the other one, but it sets you off on the right path for them choosing the best next thought and so on. I know it sounds simple to just think positive but how many people actually do this regularly in their lives? Regularly choose the best thought they can and make a habit of doing so? I know I don’t but I’ve no doubt in the power of doing this so I’ll be working on it this year, because it does take conscious effort.
I 100% agree with you that action is absolutely necessary, nothing comes without it!

Well that's a pretty terrifying story!

Can I ask how much you were paying to be told think more positively and that you would attract clients etc.

Did the person you were paying not see you were getting into debt and want to change their advice to you at all?

The law of attraction seems to have been hijacked by a lot of lazy people these days. It certainly isn't about writing down something you want and then waiting for it to appear because you're feeling positive about it.

Books like The Secret and Think and Grow Rich talk about a true law of attraction. All it really comes down to is deciding what you want and then by believing you will achieve that goal, you will actually take the necessary steps to do just that.

Think about starting a dream business. No amount of writing "£1million" on a piece of paper is going to make that business a success. You could, however, decide that you will create a successful business no matter what. This will lead to you taking the necessary steps to achieve that; whether it be in long working hours, never giving up, sourcing outside help.

I wish a lot of these new-age law of attraction people would go away. They're profiting from people being desperate, and offering nothing of substance.

There are definitely fraudsters out there giving LOA a bad name and ripping people off. I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with new age spirituality, it’s just when people try to make money out of it when they don’t actually have anything of value to bring to the table, that it starts to grate.

I love a bit of healthy discussion :) And yes I agree one hundred percent that choosing a thought that is a bit more positive is a brilliant thing to do, because you aren't forcing yourself to feel positive when you don't but it might break a downward cylce :)

Personally, I don't practice LOA. I do agree with @Moneyless Man that being positive, setting a goal and WORKING to get there is what really happens to people. Since making a conscious effort to be happier my life has been better, but I've also worked harder too and not allowed myself to get negative often like I used to.

Also, I agree that LOA can make people get into a dangerous mindset that if something goes wrong, someone dies, they lose their job etc, that it is because they weren't positive enough.

In the Blogging World, I see bloggers who write shit about visualising themselves earning £5k a month and if they pretend that, to their readers and in their life, that they will become successful. Then lo and behold they can't get a mortgage with their fictitious earnings, or they are in a load of debt, and the truth comes out.

They set that goal and then 3 months later you see their blogspot blog has died a death even after they post all their motivation quotes in poster form up in their office..

I don't even mind people trying to make money out of it really, but I just have a bit of an issue with trying to make it the answer to everything. I think its all about balance. Find what works for you as an individual and do that. :)

Yep spot on. There’s no one size fits all. Did I read that you’re a life coach? Do you have a blog?

Oh god that’s bad. I wonder at what point they realise they’re kidding themselves? It’s so inauthentic, this is why I got out of an MLM business - I didn’t want to lie and mislead people that I was doing better than I was.
