Yes I've just read this post, interesting stuff. I did data entry back when I was student although it was office based and I didn't mind it.

I think one of my first 'temping' jobs was at Norwich Union doing data entry into spreadsheets. At 17 years old and getting paid a few hundred weekly I thought I was a right baller lol

I basically do this as (part of) my normals job(s) anyway. I need to have a look on the websites you list to investigate how much is involved per job to work out the time efficiency (approx hourly rate expectations, I guess!). It might be something sensible for me to look at, will definitely investigate further, thanks.

Hi Jon!
In your post you reference an advert for a 'data entry qualification' you found on Reed. This is almost certainly a scam. Adverts for 'qualifications' like these have been around for at least 2 decades, you often find them on sites like jobcentreplus, and it takes many requests from jobseekers for the sites to take them down.
I met a few people who forked out, the 'course' was bloody useless, and they never found any work whatsoever!

aye that's why I mention that I'm not sure how useful they would be

I remember 15 odd years ago being told I needed to do the European Computer Driving License test or I would never end up working in IT

What a load of rubbish that was lol

I was told to get that driving licence too, but couldn't afford it at the time... I've now been using Microsoft Office for about 20 years (and I did pay for an Advanced Level course on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, 6 weeks f/t, when I was out of work, over 12 years ago), no one's ever asked me for that licence. I only sat tests (spelling, grammar, basic Maths, touchtyping, and Microsoft Office including Outlook) once, for a recruitment agency. I aced the tests but never got the job I had applied for: it was for Lloyds, a project management thing (using Prince, they would have paid for me to get the qualification), the managers really wanted me (3 interviews in total!)… but the job went to an internal candidate whose uncle or something was a director!
I've been looking at MOOCs in computing (data science etc.), can people who work in IT recommend any of them?

It's tricky as someone who recruited ICT staff in my previous job, qualifications just didn't get you through the door (this is the public sector i'm talking about here) and it was all about experience so I feel time is better spent getting into ICT Contractacting where you can do a few weeks in different places here and there and get paid!

btw, I remember those recruitment agency tests! I also remember faxing my timesheet off each week lol simpler times!
