Hi,

I have been a member of this forum for a few years and always used this site as a great source of ideas. I used to be reliant on Matched Betting as a solid second income but those days are long gone for now.

I have started to take more seriously other options of creating a second income. I currently use Prolific, intelliZoom, Populus, YourSayPays, but I have dropped other survey sites that have poor pay rates per hour. I also have Roamler and Shepper apps but have not really used them. I have a YouTube channel, but this is a long way from being monetized.

My short to medium-term goal is a target of £500 per month and then to kick on from there to four figures.

I have access to a desktop computer, stable internet, webcam, microphone, mobile, video camera, car, urban location, and access to public transport.

My personal qualities are quiet, thinker, numerical, reliable, 35 years of retail experience, physically fit, Asperger's. My Achilles are slow Typer, not so good with the written word, anxious at times.

So my questions are, I am aware of ways of making a second income, but what are your experiences, what advice, and which income streams based on my above qualities would be best for creating an efficient use of time for a second income?

Thanks for reading.

Have you looked into doing web search evaluator work with lionbridge / telus?

Crisp thinking offer a lot of work at a great rate as well

Offering services / skills that you have on the likes of upwork / fiverr / people per hour can be very lucrative

I wouldn’t look for ONE thing to be the solution and instead would look at a handful

Hi Jon,

Web search evaluation is worth investigating, so thanks for that.

I am not sure about offering skills on the likes of Upwork or similar companies because I would be uncertain as to what I can offer that would be of value or that I am skilled enough. Maybe people could pay me to travel and take videos of locations in the UK, but then I would need to learn about the transfer of files, etc.

Definitely agree with you, that a portfolio of income would be good as long as it is an efficient use of time, or maybe I just need to hit as much as possible and learn as I go what works.

Over the years of earning online and having been binned off from more high paying online work with companies than I can remember I've found the more 'in control' you can be of the work + income the better.

So flogging web skills, content skills, art skills etc on Upwork and being able to control the adverts, how much I spend on promotion and the quality of the work I provide + how much I charge works out FAR better for me in the long run.

But on the flip side, Chelts is next week so make sure you get on some of that!

Matched betting is dead for me unfortunately and I feel uncomfortable going down the multi-accounting route, I may try again when I move house within the next couple of years.

I think the main issue with selling skills at the moment is authority, yes I have a YouTube channel, and yes I do get compliments on my content, but with less than 400 subscribers I am not in a strong position to sell my skills and wouldn't want to burn bridges with getting bad reviews. Also, I am not tech-savvy about delivering a product to a client over the internet. Blogging and websites are not something I am involved in due to my weakness with the written word, I would imagine in the future I could turn to a paid version of Grammarly.

I really appreciate your input, it helps me to recognize weaknesses and solutions

Just popped over to your YouTube channel and subscribed :) It looks great. I see sometimes that Appen offer photo and video tasks but I've never done any of those so I don't know much about them. Overall I'd agree with Jon though and applying to loads of places to have multiple income streams. I'm a single parent and have been getting by for ten or so years by doing this. It's quite funny sometimes how one door closes and another opens, the flexibility of these small jobs is a life saver for me too. Also if you do a good job then you can get promoted with some of these companies and get better pay rates.

@Lemonade23 Hi, thank you so much.

Totally agree with you I need a portfolio of income, maybe one day the YouTube channel will take and be significant but until then I need to find some more work that fits in with my skills. I have yet to get serious about mobile app tasks, mystery shopping, and merchandising work, so maybe I should look at those next.

Yes I need to get more motivated with the mobile apps. I did my first Shepper task the other day and it was super easy. I shouldn't have left it so long. :)
Part of me misses doing the mobile app work.

YEARS AGO I used to do the Roamler flower checks every Thursday morning on the way into work and used to make an easy £45 a week for literally taking 2 photos and answers the same 3 questions over and over again in each store I did.

good times!

@Jon
With your experience of Roamler, did you find better-paying tasks as you went up the levels? What happens when you move up levels? I think I am on level 3.

Not that I recall - the only advantage was that you could pre-book more of the tasks at once compared to those down the lower levels

Have you considered freelance work on Fiverr. I've carved a niche with writing specific blog posts and articles and I'm getting repeat orders on there. Not huge money but around $25 for 500 words when the client needs a quick turnaround.

Worth looking into, even for non-writing gigs.

Do you not use the app any more or are the payments just very much reduced? I used to do a lot of mystery shopping but the payments did go down.

Not done any mobile app work for YEARS

I think the general concensious is that there is more work on there now than there used to be but the work is a bit more involved and sometimes the pay isn't as high as it was. (I'm sure I used to get £5 per flower check and they took about 15 seconds to do in each store!)

Hi, it is something I could possibly Look into further down the road for nonwriting gigs. I can actually see myself as a customer rather than a provider. At some stage to progress my YT channel I will have to build a website or blog to complement my content and would look to hire to create articles or blog posts as my grammar and writing aren't the best.
