I used to think of teaching as something that I could never do – I’m not a qualified teacher by any means.
However a few years ago, I realised that lots of people have some kind of expertise that other people may not necessarily have. What’s more, it’s possible to earn some good money by teaching those who are really keen to learn a new skill!
I make extra money on the side by teaching women how to apply make-up (usually for weddings) - I charge £30 for a make-up lesson lasting one hour. I got into this as a little earner on the side through doing wedding make up for friends and family. After a few comments about the fact that they didn’t know how to apply make up in the same way as I did, it dawned on me that I had a skill set that was sought after.
I didn’t have to get a qualification, I just put together a portfolio of my work and after some local advertising and word of mouth recommendations, I managed to get some bookings.
I’ve been wondering what other skills could be taught without the need for being a qualified teacher. There are all sorts of skills that I’d like to learn myself such as how to knit properly and sew for example. Actually I’d like to learn how to bake really good cakes too. I imagine that this could be a nice earner for someone who could teach crafts or baking!
Are you an expert in something? Have you thought about teaching your area of expertise for money? What could you teach?
