Hey, so I thought I would give this a go. I started reading the instructions on teepublic on the rules on your image and it got very confusing. I'm going to keep things simple to start with and just have a simple image and text all in one colour.

One thing I am finding confusing is that the background of the image is white as the actual text obviously doesn't cover the whole thing, but when I click on upload and look at it on a t-shirt, it looks like a big white box with my text on. Should I have changed a preference somewhere?

What software are you using to create the image? Make sure you save the file as a transparent PNG format

@Queen Jess - When you are creating your design you need to make the background of the design transparent. If you are using GIMP then it is File --> New. Then Click on advanced options and select Fill With. Change that to the transparency option.
If you create your design over the transparency option then when you upload the design that is all that will appear.

Thank you so much to the OP, I decided to give this a whirl thinking it would be easy, its not! But have got a few very simple designs going, I just have 2 questions, does anyone have a working link to download gimp for windows? and also what do others do about images/pictures? make your own, find free ones etc? I don't want to fall foul of any copyright infringements.

If you search for creative commons copyright free images you'll find loads on various sites - eg Pixabay. Otherwise some images have a licence in which the owner of the image will explain its usage.

Thanks Lotus, I shall look into that, does anyone know how to create original artwork with a computer?

You can use a specialist drawing tablet with a pen and free software or just use free software such as Gimp or InkScape on a normal laptop/desktop.

If you've got a normal tablet you could use software and a pen input as an alternative to a mouse. I think what you want to design will inform your choice in terms of what you use for designing. If you're successful then it makes sense to invest in tech to make things quicker and your life easier.

Inkscape has tutorials available but it can take a bit of time to get used to. I'm going to have a look at Gimp this month and create some designs as part of my passive income streams.

Anybody who's loaded a design onto Teepublic -

I have now posted five of my designs onto Teepublic. However, when I do a search for them using my tags and descriptions I don't get any of my designs selected. I can see the designs in my storefront but not through the general search. Is there a step I have missed?

@Nigel_TCMM Perhaps these only show up in your storefront when you are logged in and show up in the general search when you are logged out?

Not done any of this (yet), so it is the only thing I can think of. Hope it helps :)

I've now queried the position with Teepublic and this is what they have told me:
.......While TeePublic is an open platform where anyone can host and sell from their own storefront, our site's discovery tools is more curated. Due to legal or creative reasons, your designs will not show up in search or on the "new" or "browse" areas of the site. However, you will still be able to sell your work through direct link to your page or to the individual product pages.

I then asked what specifically were the legal or creative reasons. The reply was:
.....We found some aspects of these works on other websites. If you upload more original art then we can take it from there.

So I interpret that as meaning that because I already have these designs on the Redbuble site they won't allow the general search on Teepublic. It will be interesting to see if that also applies to any other POD sites.

Nothing is ever straightforward!

Well that sucks a bit, thanks for pointing it out.

Shocked this morning I got accepted into Amazon merch, was expecting a no, didn't put anything particularly exciting in the about me bit, oh well not going to complain, anyone else applied?

In the space of a couple of days I've had good news and bad news on my attempts at becoming a POD entrepreneur .

For the good news I got my first ever sales. I sold 5 stickers on Redbubble. Only £999,997 to go before I make that first million.

The bad news is that I got rejected by Amazon. No reason was given. I thought I gave a good account of myself and I did post links to my best designs. Maybe the way to go is like @leeseylee and don't give much away. This is a bit of a blow.

So far I have got my designs on Redbubble but have had no success with Teepublic and now Amazon. I know of Teespiral but does anybody have other suggestions for POD sites I can try?

Lots of useful advice, thanks! Great idea to use GIMP. T shirt printing is been on my radar as a little money maker after reading about it in a parenting mag but I need to work out the best way to execute it. My ideas centre around baby/kids clothes so I'm looking for companies that will do small sizes.

The sites I have been looking at for this are:
Spreadshirt.co.uk
Streetshirts.co.uk
Teespring.com
Teemill.com

I've bookmarked some articles about it too:
Make-money-designing-tshirts
This Is Money - Free design t shirt site
The Hustle - profiting on Teespring

My broad plan is to make my designs and get them listed, then work out ways to market them. I love the fact you only have to do the design part the receiving orders/shipping/handling returns is done elsewhere.

For the marketing ideas I followed a link on Pick My Postcode that lets you have a free course from Shaw Academy. They have digital marketing or social media marketing courses available.

Have you had a look at Society6? It’s very similar to redbubble.
