Lots of useful advice, thanks! Great idea to use GIMP. T shirt printing is been on my radar as a little money maker after reading about it in a parenting mag but I need to work out the best way to execute it. My ideas centre around baby/kids clothes so I'm looking for companies that will do small sizes.

The sites I have been looking at for this are:
Spreadshirt.co.uk
Streetshirts.co.uk
Teespring.com
Teemill.com

I've bookmarked some articles about it too:
Make-money-designing-tshirts
This Is Money - Free design t shirt site
The Hustle - profiting on Teespring

My broad plan is to make my designs and get them listed, then work out ways to market them. I love the fact you only have to do the design part the receiving orders/shipping/handling returns is done elsewhere.

For the marketing ideas I followed a link on Pick My Postcode that lets you have a free course from Shaw Academy. They have digital marketing or social media marketing courses available.

Zazzle do kids sizes, also there is an option on redbubble for kids too, also you can use prinitfy (there are others too but I use them) to sell on Etsy and there are options for kids on there too, you can also set your own prices.

Quick update, I now have over 70 designs, have really thrown myself into it, its become a bit of an obsession actually, have sold 13 in my first month, have shops on redbubble, zazzle, etsy and amazon, had made sales on redbubble and zazzle. Have maxed by allocation on Amazon and not sold a thing, wonder if I am doing something wrong!

Thanks all for the suggestions. I've now opened up a store on Teespring and I'm slowly loading my designs on there. I'll follow on with the other sites.

I also read an article that suggested a site called Zazzle.

Any updates on how people are getting on with this? I have just applied to join Amazon Merch but wondering whether other platforms might be better.

I'm afraid to say that I've still only made £3 in sales. I've loaded my designs on Redbubble, Teespring, Zazzle and Spreadshirt. Amazon and Teepublic didn't want me :(

I think my designs are as good as others out there so I guess it's all down to promotion. I'm lost amongst the thousands of other designs. I'm hoping my new Christmas collection will attract some sales:

So how are the other folk (those earning ££££) promoting their items? What are they doing that you're not doing do you think?

i wish you luck for Christmas. Hopefully Amazon will accept me and I can give it a go. The designs are by my daughter who drew me a mother's day card and I thought this would look great on a t-shirt and would be a fun project for us to do together. Let's see what happens......

@Jon - I would also be interested to know how other people get their sales. I have created niche designs as Bobcat originally suggested and then I have pushed it a little bit through my wife's Facebook. I will try again with that as we move into the Christmas period. Other than that I don't know what else to do.

I wonder if it's like the ebay market where you competing with other people in what is effectively a race to the bottom price wise just to get noticed!

Paid advertising I suspect. I have t-shirts that I've purchased based on facebook ads.

Well Amazon accepted me! So here goes! I don't plan to upload loads of designs, only one so far! And maybe another design in a week or two. Will see how well we get on with Amazon and then maybe move onto redbubble and zazzle as I think the idea would look great on a tote bag! Fingers crossed for all of us giving this a go!

long tail keywords and designs. E.g. nurses who play hockey rather than just 'nurses'

Also joined redbubble. I think having a large number of designs is the vital component unless you get lucky! Best start working on more designs......

On the back of this thread I got my boyfriend to upload a design on to Redbubble he did years ago that goes viral in his home town a couple of times a year. He's sold 9 t-shirts in a week. He's very pleased with himself and is now motivated to do some more designs so thank you :)

Just reviving this thread as its something I will look into soon. One of the FB groups I am on has a couple of amazing success stories with Merch.
Anyone from this thread had any luck?

Do you think doing various music related designs could work? I used to be a part of 99designs but that didn't work out and i wasn't great at Photoshop back then.

@Annie Beau - since I started I've sold 11 products and had one commission so I've earned about £10 pounds in total. For me it has become less than an income stream and more of a hobby. I've got 60 designs loaded onto 4 sites (but not Amazon :() and I have had great fun creating those designs. When I get a sale it is a bonus and I get a bit of a buzz from it. In the words of the immortal Del Trotter 'this time next year .......'.
