I make a nice amount of money, currently £400-£600 per month online from youtube using the google adsense program. This works by uploading videos to my channel that people search for, enjoy watching and will want to share. The money bit comes when they click on the adverts that the google adsense program places on each video.

I am no expert, in fact my video animation skills a very basic, and I'm sure there's loads I don't know. But here's my top tips if you want to start a youtube channel.

For the mechanics of becoming a youtube partner and applying adsense to your account, see the youtube guide here https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2548877?hl=en-GB

  • Plan your channel first. Choose a topic you have a passion for, you're going to be making lots of videos, and it will likely become tedious, so choose something you enjoy doing. A hobby, perhaps making cupcakes, fixing bikes, bootcamp excercises, knitting whatever you think people will want to watch. A friend of mine found a really good niche, breast feeding, but his wife wouldn't entertain the idea lol.

  • Choose keywords that people already search for, use google's keyword planner tool to find phrases that people are already searching for. For example there are 74,000 monthly searches for 'how to knit' but only 6,600 for 'learn to knit'. Also the planner will give you lots of ideas for videos you maybe hadn't thought of for example finger knitting, knitting stitches. You have to sign up to the adwords program to make an account but it's free.

  • Concentrate on making good quality informative videos to begin with. It will be sometime before you make any money unless you're really lucky. AS a guide my best month was August 2013 when I made £600, I had 1 million video views. So to get £6 you'll need at least 10,000 views
  • You might need to invest in some decent video and sound equipment. My videos are usually animated not filmed, although I've got a bit of both.
  • Watch out for copyright, you need to ensure you have the rights, or permission to use the sound and images within your video
  • Use your key words in the file name, title, description and tags of you video when uploading to youtube. But use sparingly once, don't overspam.
  • You don't have to make the videos your self, you can use sites like Fiverr.com to get people to make them for you, just ensure you tell them what you want the video for.
  • Build your channel and your subscribers before you even think of making money. Comment on other peoples videos, subscribe to other channels to get more subscribers to your own, set up a face book page and comment regularly. Link your channel to a twitter account, google+, Pinterest etc etc to help spread the word. Join forums and post a link to your channels where you're allowed, don't spam.

  • Do not ever click on your own ads, google knows and you will get your account banned for it!

Here's my channel http://www.youtube.com/user/GreatBirthdayIdeas I hope you enjoy it!

If you have a youtube channel, lets see it! and I'd be delighted to learn tips from other youtubers too, please share :D

Stuff of dreams this is...

Is that £600 of passive income? As in once the video is made the money just rolls in automatically or is it a constant battle of adding back links to and mentioning your new uploads on blogs etc.

very VERY interesting all this..

I'm delighted to say it's passive income ;D I'm often uploading new stuff though, but I have taken a break of a month or 2 when I got fed up and not loaded anything and it doesn't seem to make much difference. I don't do any back linking as it's so tedious, when I upload I also add it to google+, twitter, facebook, pinterest and blogger. I don't know if that makes much difference, but it only takes a minute.
The good videos are self perpetuating as people use them to send as birthday greetings and they get shared, so its a snowball effect.
£600 is my best month which was last September, it's been dropping since then so I've been uploading again and it seems to be increasing.
Here's today's hehe http://youtu.be/k86UKeJtqHQ
Please do not click on my adsense links thinking you're helping me out, Google spots unnatural clicks and deletes the account  Feel free to share the videos though!!
I've started to get some requests, last week it was 1direction, although I'm not sure how to do this one lol

I've seen your videos before on YouTube...I can't think why. Maybe I've seen you promote them somewhere else?

That's amazing that you make that much money. My daughter is obsessed with Monster High dolls and has a huge collection. There are videos on there with the dolls that people have done put to varying soundtracks - for example which song 'suits' which doll - and they have really high hits. This is something that she's done for herself but we haven't uploaded them for fear of breaching copyright or something and having to pay out loads of money.

I wrote a post on the green site about them last year, and some-one was kind enough to post a link, so it might be from there, other than that I don't really post on any other sites.
I think you'd be fine videoing the dolls there would be no copyright there, but you you couldn't use any music as it would be copy right, although I've seen lots of people do it, not sure how they get away with it. There has to be a niche there doesn't there?!

Yeah, these that are on definitely have proper music to them - Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, 1D. Not sure how they get away with it or whether artists don't sue?

I mean look at this one for hits, although I guess they could be fake?

Do you mean the hits could be fake? I don't think so, I don't know how they would do that. I think the reason they have so many views is that the channel has over 60,000 subscribers, building up subscribers is quite key, and hard to start with.
I don't see why you can't do a video like this without the music though, or find some royalty free music.

Could those views be bought from sites like fivesquud?

I imagine google is clever enough to detect rigged YouTube views though

Got to ask then

What is your plan with all this in the long term?

Made a new channel and try for a different audience/market?

Hi Jon,
my only plan at the moment is to keep adding more videos, I don't really have any time to think of starting something new, but it's a good point, that I'd not given much consideration to before :)

Wow you are doing really well. I would love to have a go at something like this but I'm not really sure where to start, also I hate videoing myself and hate the sound of my voice lol

The gaming market on YouTube must be in total saturation.

Everyone wants to be the new PewDiePie it seems

Today I've been researching how to get more subscribers to your channel. The more subscribers you have, the larger your audience. here's what I found.

1. Upload content regularly, at least weekly if not every other day - eek

2. Actively engage with your audience, reply to comments and ask for opinions

3. Promise to do something amazing/outrageous/memorable when you reach a certain number of subscribers. (This could be donate to charity, run down the street naked and video it, for example!) This will create interest and get people on board

4. Subscribe to other channels and comment on other similar interest videos

5. Promote your channel on social media, you can use the following html to past a subscribe link on your blog or website
<script src="https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js"></script>
<div class="g-ytsubscribe" data-channel="Your Channel Name Here">
</div>

6. Keep things consistent, if you have a channel about cupcakes, don't start posting about camping!

7. Annotate you videos with a call to action at the end, such as like, share or of course subscribe.

8. Ask for subscribers, like this, PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL!! http://www.youtube.com/user/GreatBirthdayIdeas

Right I'm off to do some of the above
