Marketing your business can be something of a dark art, things that work for some dont for others and sometimes all you need is a little push in the right direction that could make all the difference.

Are you already marking your business, blog, social etc...? What works well for you? What hasn't worked out?

I've always found social media to be a better place to start than people give it credit for. If you're on your own and don't have a huge budget then it's definitely a great place to start looking and trying to answer

- where do your customers REALLY hang out (online or offline)?
- what problems do they have regardless of your ability to solve them?
- what language do they use to describe problems, products and services?

From there you can usually build a framework for starting the right conversations in the right places, allowing you to build an audience and so a customer base. You'll need to focus on a mix of:

- interacting with content from relevant accounts
- great content that you create yourself
- sharing great content from others and commenting on it
- helping people find value somewhere/anywhere you can find it

That is really helpful thanks @dinokapi.
What do you recommend for someone starting with 0 followers? From experience I have found it easier to grow from a few hundred to a few thousand than it is to start from 0.
For example, since taking over the money shed, we needed to create a new twitter account so we only have 6 followers.

If you're starting out on Twitter you need to be regularly engaging to stand a chance. Find a little pocket of people in your niche either by typing in keywords or finding lists of relevant people. Then get involved in 10 conversations a week (10 a day would be better but no need to go more than that). You'll find the areas where you're best off diving in and the best people to speak to. If it's twitter specifically, contact me, I'm doing alright there and I'll follow anyone back who mentioned the Money Shed to me - Iamdanrice on Twitter

When I am teaching kickstarters, grads or coaches how to get started on Twitter I typically build them a weekly checklist of activity to keep up with and provide them with a small list of people in their industry (usually marketing or startups) to get them moving on engagement.

That's really helpful thanks! I really need to set some time aside to dedicate to TMS socials. Always seems to take up more time than I expect.

I've experimented with trying to automate social posts etc... In the past but I think there is no substitute for spending some time on it.

If you fully automate it, there's only a matter of time before something goes wrong. Arguably the same for scheduling, think if you say something is on fire or the bomb... then a major terrorist incident occurs in the homeland of your main target audience! You don't want to be so careful that you're boring, but you can schedule in a way that grows steadily and with less risk without spending huge time to produce these things.
