Right...my second bet is now placed. The Save The Student guide is fantastic - no more time spent looking at odds and trying to decipher things.

I remember doing all this about seven years ago and backing an event at one online bookie
and laying it at Betfair. It did work quite sweet especially when Ladbroke.s had their £200 offer
for new customers and Bet365 had £150 on the go at the time. I think I made about £800 without
any real financial exposure :)

The best sports to use this on are one's which have only two outcomes (win and loss) like Tennis,
Snooker and Darts. Sports like Football can be a bit of pain with the draw flinging up a third outcome
meaning more time in working out odds.

I've known about matched betting for years, but I just haven't really been ready to try it out. However, my £10,000 challenge means that I am ready to give it a try now.

I am going to follow the Save The Student guide, because I like those guys - I'm sure they will be getting a commission when using their links, but they deserve it :)

Is £200 the suggested "float" then?

I don't think it really matters how much you start off with - whatever you can afford to inject into the project really.

I prefer to have money sitting in Betfair all the time to cover my exchange "liabilities" without constantly depositing and withdrawing funds from there. It means having funds tied up temporarily, but it has worked out quite well for me so far. My balance in there goes up and down all the time, depending on whether my lay bets come in or not.

I've been testing out the system using free bets on those sites I already have accounts with, and have reached £40 profit so far this month.

Good luck! :)

I think maybe the new online tools make footie betting much easier these days :). When I first looked at matched betting years ago it looked a bit too daunting and time-consuming. A lot of the hard work is done for you now - your job is to make sure you follow the instructions to the letter

£500 - £1000 a month is achievable but will take a LOT longer than 10 minutes a day and will gradually get less as the bookies ban you!

Bookies aren't going to ban you. Neither bookie is going to know you've bet on the other outcome as well.

It doesn't make any difference there being a third outcome. The lay bet is for the team 'not to win' so includes losing and drawing.

Isn't there also a risk with tennis that a player can retire hurt which invalidates the match? I'm sure there are different rules about whether it's considered to have gone ahead or not depending on how far into the match it is, which makes it a bit complicated.

The highest bet I can place at quite a few online bookies is for example, 12p. They can limit you severely if you are contstantly placing large bets and winning - they will say that you are not profitable for them.

I wish that was true! You will be fine doing the sign up offers but to make an ongoing income from this you will be betting mainly when they have some sort of free bet / refund / bonus offer. This soon flags up your account and they will limit the amount you can bet and eventually close you down.

Don't bet on tennis. Books have different rules regarding retirements. Avoid horses until you really know what you are doing although some books have very profitable weekly offers on the racing. Some books also increase their sign up bonuses for the Cheltenham Festival in March.

For sign up offers stick to major UK or Champions League football. Try and think what a normal punter would bet on!

I made a reasonable amount out of this malarky for about 8 years but recent changes to the UK gambling laws made it difficult to use overseas books. That and being banned by most UK books led me to recently call it quits!

By the very nature of matched betting, it will sometimes be your 'back' bet that wins and sometimes your 'lay' bet. You will therefore appear to be losing some of the time with either your mainstream bookie or Betfair and as such it's unlikely that your activities will be brought to their attention. As it says in the 'Savethestudent' guide, "Matched betting is legal and a spokesperson for William Hill has indicated that the betting industry does not have a problem with this use of free bets".

Looks like Ladbrokes are now running an exchange too.

Yes I've used the Lads exchange in exactly the same way as Betfair - the commission is the same at 5%. It's useful if you want to take advantage of Betfair sportsbook promotions, as sometimes it states in the T&C that you can't place a qualifying bet on the sportsbook and then lay the same selection on the Betfair exchange.

The only problem with the Ladbrokes exchange is for some events there might not be enough money sloshing around to get your bet matched in full, so it's best to keep an eye on this.

I find the Coral site and iPhone app quite slow. Anyone else experienced this?

yes!!

I tend to just stick to betfair now as they have a cashout button that I find quite useful.
