I started doing some freelancing (surveys, mystery shopping etc for now) about 3 weeks ago. I'm also employed part time and earn just under 8k per annum. I re registered as self employed today and didn't check the box to apply for a small earnings exemption because I *think* I earn too much overall. I doubt I'll bring in more than about £500 from self employment before the end of the tax year but it's too early to tell and I hope to be build it up over the coming months.
My mum thinks self employed NI is separate and that I should have applied for an exemption. Is this correct?

She is right. It is separate and you do need to apply for an exception if you think your self employment will bring in less than £5885 per year
