Hi All,

Me and my partner have moved into our house over the weekend.

There is lots to do and of course lots of things to buy.

Any tips on saving money when first moving in?

Is this a bought house or rented?

If it's the former then I would say hold tight to your money for the first few months. Mainly because that's when things will go wrong. Things you didn't even know were wrong! Bad plumbing, leaking roofs etc.. You will discover it all!

It's a bought house.

Ahh the joys!!

We moved in, totally stretching ourselves to get the house in the first place

Within the first 2 months we had

Garage door that wouldn't shut
Leaking Roof into bedroom
Broken Toilet
Stair that went through

@katykicker is going through her own version of this at the moment but basically, whenever you buy a house there is a ton of stuff you just don't notice until you start 'using' the house!!

My house is a council house, that I hope to buy, but we've already spent around £3,500 just getting in the door and carpeting upstairs etc so I think it's in between private rental and buying a house, in terms of money spent.

We've got a list of must-do jobs and then a list of should do soon jobs and then just things that we would *like* to do. We're trying to do a balance of all the must-do jobs, a few should do and the occasional like to do job. It is keeping us sane, and mostly happy, while we wait for the council to fix the roof, guttering, stairs and more.

My tips for saving money would be:

Shop around
Upcycle
Re-use anything you can. We had some old furniture we didn't want anymore that we have repurposed
Buy quality where you can like carpet, paint supplies etc (doesn't have to be expensive paint but don't assume that cheap paint brushes, rollers etc will work just as well!)
Visit charity shops - I've picked up some lovely smaller items to make the house a home lately
Try eBay for tools or specific items you need
See if your local council has a scheme for furniture and/or paint as sometimes you can get half used tins of paint etc for free to avoid them going to landfill

Hope this helps x
