I'm starting an evening English class in September so I mentioned to the bf that I'm going to need to replace my old broken laptop... He's agreed to buy me one for my birthday next month, as he's just received a 12 month 0% credit card- Great Timing! :D

I'm no good at specs though.

This is the one I've been looking at, can anyone tell me if it looks good or not please?

https://www.asus.com/Notebooks/X553MA/

Few things I'd like:
8GB
1TB
Numeric keypad

I'm gonna be using it for social media, surveys, research and class work, maybe streaming music and downloading films.

Thank you!

I use my laptop for similar to you, I tend to go with Toshiba, just because I usually pick them up for under £300 and they last me a good couple of years. I like to get a new one whenever there is a new operating system and I tend to wear out the keyboards on them VERY fast, because of all the typing...

Sure someone will be along soon to tell you if that is any good, just wanted to say... Don't forget to look for cashback :D

Asus are a decent brand for a decent price (couple of hundred)

For what you want to do it would be idea, same as a Lenovo or Toshiba would as well

For what you want I would say the max you want to be spending is around £300 odd

I have an HP Pavilion and it is really good. My Toshiba was about to give up so replaced it before it died on me completely.
This one works really well and only cost me £399 for an i5 from Currys PC World as they had a sale on and it was the last few remaining. I checked everywhere and the same model elsewhere was over £500 so it was a really good deal.
Worth checking Currys/PC World especially with the May Bank Holiday coming up as often they have a sale then.

HP is gaining popularity now. They have nice laptops with nice specs. Asus is also a good choice.

And if you get a laptop with a small dedicated graphics card it will last a lot longer than running off integrated graphics commonly named hd 400 which means you have really know grab his card is a very small chip on the motherboard that does not take stress at all

I use HP for work. In the same time that my HP laptop from work has been going for I've got through an Acer, an Asus, a Dell and a Levorno laptop for play. I still have my HP laptop for work and now have one for play and they're both indestructible. Which is both good and bad as everyone else in work has surface pros and I'm still running on a 2009 HP laptop looking like a technical dinosaur. It's been dropped so many times that the case resembles a scene from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre but the only things that have been replaced on it are the battery and the charger (and that was only because the charger lost a fight with the hoover).

Lenovo and Acer are pretty good although these can change so I tend to go by reviews of laptops within my budget.

Boring recommendation is go to Tesco and buy any laptop that is £299. They are all much of a muchness ESPECIALLY if you are just doing Wordprocessing on it.

Things of note.

1) buy the 'best' processor you can afford. Ram/HDD can (usually) be upgraded yourself but processors can't.
2) For a laptop, go for a smaller form factor (keyboard without numeric keypad) to make it more portable. You can always plug in a keyboard with keypad.
3) Get one with HDMI out (so you can easily connect to a monitor or a TV - really useful when in a hotel to watch your own videos)
4) Make sure it has a user replaceable battery - At the £300 price point, it can give you an extra 12 months of useability.
5) Buy a brand you have heard of - Simple ,but will make your life easier when somehow you lose your 'W' button and need to order a spare.
6) No matter what ANYONE says...get Windows as your OS. Ignore anyone who says 'Linux this' or 'Ubuntu that'.

If your budget allows it go for a macbook. I've had microsoft laptops for years and found the older it gets the slower it gets. brought my macbook a few years ago and never looked back. It runs as fast now as it did the day i purchased it.

Not sure why we are grave digging a thread from 2 years ago but anyway - I've had my Samsung for 7 years. Still works fine despite the outdated operated system.

The technical 'forum' terminology is that we are 'necrobumping' a thread!

If we're necrobumping since using a laptop with an SSD drive I'm a convert to SSD drives. Soooo much faster than anything else....
