I’m thinking about buying a netbook but have no idea where to start. I have a laptop but it is so painfully slow for some reason and it’s huge. There seem to be a range on amazon but I dont know the requirements of what I need. Basically I want to be able to matched bet, and be able to do social media evaluator stuff, so an up to date version of Windows I guess, but I’m so rubbish I’m not sure what version is newest! Does anyone have any technical advice as to what I need to look for please?

If you are buying it new they will all have the latest version of windows 10 as standard so you shouldn't need to worry about that.

You could spend ages researching the latest processors and evaluating which is the best one but for what you want it for pretty much any moden laptop/notebook will do the job. Its only if you want to play games or make flashy animations or graphics that you need a top notch machine.

If you can find one bundled with MS office i'd say that's a bonus but I do fine with open office which I think was free.

I’m a believer in Apple products and I do like to recommend apple laptops. They are somewhat/quite expensive but their usable lifespan is generally much longer.

If a netbook has windows then you can probably do everything but last time I purchased a netbook they were installing versions of Linux on them to help keep the price down.

When I last had a windows laptop I think it has a useable life of about 2 and a bit years. After that it sounded like a jet fighter taking off and the batter lasted about 40 minutes.

Thanks @The Reverend and @homie that’s helpful. Just something plain and simple that I can do my evaluating on! Might take a trip to town today..;)

My advice for ‘plain & Simple’ is get down to Tesco and buy whatever windows laptop they have for £250.

You might get 3 years out of it and it will do 99% of what you want to do with no issues

:)

Try and get the largest screen you can as it will make it more comfortable but usually most people with laptops don’t actually carry them about so size/weight isn’t that big an issue. :)

And I’m assuming I’ll be able to plug in and go? No loading word up from a floppy disc or anything?? I might be living in the 80’s!!

Yes @Jon open office is free and works fine but sometimes if you try to import to/from MS if buggers up the formatting. My kids found that out to their cost when they did their college homework on open office and then tried to open it on MS at college!

I always go for last seasons model of 'puter, because they are usually sold cheaper and do what I need. But then I am a scrooge.

I thought the netbook concept died years ago!!!

If they still exist I would say you are still better off buying a low entry laptop than a netbook. I used to have one 5/6 years ago and they are just so damn small and run a weird butchered version of windows so working long term using a netbook was never an option

I bought a refurbished HP Pavilion g series from PC World about 7 years ago and I'm amazed it still works now and I work this thing HARD. It has been on almost every single day from 7am to 9pm doing something all the time. It does sound like a jet engine (just down to dust) and the battery ran out a long time ago so now just constantly plugged in. Wouldn't recommend it if you are doing graphics/gaming because it can't seem to cope with that but for £350 I have got my moneys worth.

On that note though, I wonder why PC world don't sell refurbs anymore? I do need to replace this one soon but only because I tried removing the keys to clean it and can't get them back on properly o_O

I recently had my HP Pavilion throw the towel in, i decided i wanted something far less bulky that would do what i needed i plumped for an Asus Transformer book, its like a netbook, has a detachable keyboard, is touch screen, can be used in laptop mode or pad mode..runs on Windows 10, has a massive battery duration, powered by a USB lead.. same as a phone.. is very light, very quick and very cheap... I love it
