The more I hear about this task, the happier I am that I made a very quick decision to knock it on the head.

For the sake of fairness, has anyone managed to complete it within the stated three hours?
4.5 hours and having a hell of time getting payment - although promised now (not that that means anything from this company) to be processed this week

I will say Appen do always pay. The wait is normally for the quality checks then they only process payments twice a month.
Agree about them totally underestimating how long it takes, no way can you do all that in 3 hours

Boy, I'm glad I had the sense to visit this page again! I too signed up for the voice recording task. I had already applied for a few projects but this was the first one that I was offered - so I jumped at it.

I did the first hour and realised that there was no was I am going to be able to complete the task in 3 hours ... I am almost at 200 phrases and have already spent 2 hours on it! It is the transcription that takes the time and I found I wasn't very fast on my phone (fat thumbs!) so have been using my Chromebook with the app installed so that I can use a real keyboard. Even with that I reckon the task is going to take me nearer 10 hours than 3!

If I log back into the Appen site - I can no longer see the projects listed - just a bit of text on the page.

I read that some others have given up on the task - have you used the "Abandon" option in the app to do so, or just not completed it?

As it's my first project that I have qualified for, I am reluctant to just give up for fear of never being asked again - however I feel that same as the others here that if they were honest about how long it was going to take, and then paid accordingly then people would be able to make a more informed choice!

Your experience mirrors mine re the webpage and listed projects and when I click the link on their emails to me, I get error messages even though the person I am dealing with claims they've sorted the bug. I didn't use the abandon option because I just deleted the app before I started. I also told the person I'm dealing with that I'm not doing it (and why). I haven't heard back and although I know it's a risk that I won't be invited to anything else, I wasn't holding my breath anyway. I've been registered for nearly a year and had to apply three time so far for (I think) Yukon - I can't see the projects page anymore so I'm guessing. I think I'll give up on Leapforce and look at the threads re applying for Lionbridge. Thanks for replying - I'm glad I asked.

Hilarious,

Just re-checked my Appen timesheets. They have billed me for 1 unit at $12. So for 4.5 hours work recording 892 phrases they are paying me $12. Bunch of f###ing crooks.

Emailed them for clarification - expect some BS answer as always.

Seriously, I have no idea why anyone wants to work for this company. I did the task because I had a free day in my schedule. I should have learnt from previous experiences with them. Just horrific - worst company I have ever dealt with and I've worked for around 100 companies in my life (including time spent temping whilst a student and travelling).

I think people (myself included) gravitate towards them because of the Web Search Evaluator work. Time was when you could get that from 3 companies but now it's just them and Lionbridge so people tend to keep them on side...

Ive tried to qualify for java no such luck. The guidelines are very misleading and some questions catch you out as no information for the questions.

I tried to do fletcher but glad I haven't wasted any more of my time since reading the reviews here.

On average how long does a project last for?

it varied. The Web Search Evaluator work they offer if it's like how Leapforce ran them were 6 month renewals while with Lionbridge you were kicked off after 11 months..

I did truckee project for 9 months. I think since Appen took over they seem to be mixing it up a bit. Lots of new and obscure projects coming up it seems.

I do little bits of work for Appen here and there, recently did one where I had to say 800 phrases (very dull!).
However I have a question for you all about using Apple and being paid via Payoneer. Appen say that Payoneer is their preferred payment method and some of their tasks only accept this method of payment.
They say the Payoneer fees are low HOWEVER every time an Appen payment goes in I’m charged a ‘load fee’ of $3. Recently I earned $5 for a survey, but then I lost $3 of that when it went into Payoneer (basically like paying a 60% fee!). Another time I earned $8 and then lost $3 of this.
I queried it with Payoneer and they said that this load fee is set by Appen.
Has anyone else found a way around this? Otherwise it means that it’s just not worth my time working with Appen.
Thanks,
Laura

You can link your PayPal Account with Payoneer so you get your funds that way so when you get paid via Payoneer they pay you the amount into your registered PayPal Account. I got paid that way when I did the 5 USD Appen Survey and received £3.75 into my PayPal Account from Payoneer.
It was when I had to sign up for Payoneer for Appen to pay me that during the sign up process I was given the option of adding my PayPal e-mail address so I could receive funds that way.
Obviously you still lose a bit fee wise but still better than any other method.

I tried to qualify for Java too and failed twice.

Project length varies massively because it's all dependent on their client whose needs seem to change overnight. I was doing extra hours until two weeks before my recent project ended out of the blue. First project was spot on a year, second about 8 months, a recent one was only a few batches of work over a month roughly. If you get a decent project manager they'll answer questions about how long the project lasts but I think some are almost as in the dark as the contractors.

I got an email from Appen saying that they are wanting to recruit over 65's to do the 900 voice recordings. They've upped the payment to $100 which is more appropriate given the work involved but seems a bit unfair to those who spent 8 hours on the same task and only received $48.
