Appen are testing my patience at the moment. I've worked for them for the majority of the last few years on one project or another. In the last month they've asked me to qualify for two projects. The first, I studied the guidelines all weekend, passed the exam and was told to wait on the next email for my login information but the next email was to tell me there'd been a mistake and I wasn't actually eligible for the project anyway. I'd spent all that time qualifying for a project I wasn't actually eligible for.

Yesterday I was asked to qualify for another project. Printed off the guidelines and thankfully decided to delay working through them until today. Received an email during the night to tell me they didn't actually need anybody else on the project and 'thanking me for my time'.

Those issues and the unceremonious booting you get with no notice have really put me off Appen when it used to be the majority of my income.

I've done my first survey on it - what happens now? It says in the guidelines that I don't need to do anything to be paid for (I'm already set up on Payoneer etc) but I keep getting emails asking me to do the survey?

They've now emailed to say that they've created the invoice for me and all is good.

Has anyone received an email about the new UK English voice rating project or worked on a similar project before? I am obviously suspicious about the 2.7 hours quoted for the task - the rate of pay is borderline acceptable, but it wouldn't be worth doing if it were to take any longer.

I did this task and I'm glad to say it didn't take anywhere near the estimated time. Was really straightforward too. Pleasantly surprised!

Has anyone else received an email regarding a project with a message saying "If you have not done so previously, please take the qualification test for this project linked on your Projects page."

I have opened my Projects page but cannot see where to go for the qualification test ... the project is there but it's just the usual View Progress pop up message that appears...?

I got that email too. I was wondering if that was going to happen. They seemed pretty desperate to get people to do it. I still don't think it's worth my time because I did hate the task.

The recording and the transcribing weren't the worst aspects of the Appen task. For me, it was having to come up with a bunch of different ways to ask the same thing and trying to remember what phrase I'd already used so I didn't repeat myself. Maybe I was overthinking it and that's why it was taking so long.

All these amazing ops from Appen got emailed to me today

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you again for your interest to apply as Social Media Evaluator. We want to let you know that you have another opportunity with Appen. We would like to invite you to our 1 time 1 hour project.

  1. NOYO, this project seeks to improve search results in Facebook Search. Participation in this project is entirely voluntary and you can stop at any time. This project is only a one-time survey task and not a long-term project. However, you may be invited again to take the survey after 42 days.

  1. FLETCHER, Looking for Android and iOS users for a large-scale speech collection project. In this collection, users will utilize Appen’s smartphone app to record various phrases that can be used to train voice assistant systems. Be from one of the following countries: United Kingdom, Canada (both French and English-speaking parts).

  1. CARMEL, Looking for Native/Bilingual British English speakers anywhere in United Kingdom for a project that aims to train robots to talk to humans in different scenarios, such as making phone call, or directing a device, etc.

  1. FALEME, Record conversations with your family/friend on 19 topics provided as if you are communicating in short voice or audio messages with each other on apps such as Messenger or WhatsApp.

I can also see the 866 phrases task .. but mine is set to $100!! Going up!!

Do I take it that this is the same as the first one we all had a go at ... with the transcription as well?

A quick question to all Appen veterans. I did the Noyo task and they auto generate an invoice for you. Now what do I do with it? I know I have to submit it on 1st but how and if I submit it later than the 1st is that ok? These questions are so silly but I do find the instructions given as clear as mud sometimes!!!

I am doing the fletcher task too, regret regret, ha ha, and the deadline is tomorrow. I think it takes so much time because its very dull, I find myself doing anything but....my home has never been so clean. I have no idea whether I am doing it correctly, whether it matters or whether I am repeating myself, I feel like I want to get it done as I now view it as an endurance event!

When I used to do my invoices for Leapforce (not Appen) I always invoiced on the 1st. Is it still a 'within 30 day payment promise'?

Completely agree, I finished yesterday and it took a lot longer as I spent extra moments second guessing myself about what I had already said, coming up with new and 'interesting' ways as well as straight damn weird ways of saying something. I am just proud I finished it as it was a real real slog and I really wanted to give up! Being paid is almost irrelevant now and I think all who have done it should get a participation medal!

I have noticed that a lot of the Projects in the list are specific to Apple devices ... is this quite common? There are a few that sound quite interesting but as I am an Android bunny I can't try to qualify for them :-(

I know but there still a decent number that you can apply for that are not ios dependant. I have an ipad for the apple ones and a laptop for the rest, but beyond the crazy speech one, am still waiting to get onto any of the projects. FIngers crossed for us both.
