Ive tried to qualify for java no such luck. The guidelines are very misleading and some questions catch you out as no information for the questions.

I tried to do fletcher but glad I haven't wasted any more of my time since reading the reviews here.

On average how long does a project last for?

it varied. The Web Search Evaluator work they offer if it's like how Leapforce ran them were 6 month renewals while with Lionbridge you were kicked off after 11 months..

I did truckee project for 9 months. I think since Appen took over they seem to be mixing it up a bit. Lots of new and obscure projects coming up it seems.

I do little bits of work for Appen here and there, recently did one where I had to say 800 phrases (very dull!).
However I have a question for you all about using Apple and being paid via Payoneer. Appen say that Payoneer is their preferred payment method and some of their tasks only accept this method of payment.
They say the Payoneer fees are low HOWEVER every time an Appen payment goes in I’m charged a ‘load fee’ of $3. Recently I earned $5 for a survey, but then I lost $3 of that when it went into Payoneer (basically like paying a 60% fee!). Another time I earned $8 and then lost $3 of this.
I queried it with Payoneer and they said that this load fee is set by Appen.
Has anyone else found a way around this? Otherwise it means that it’s just not worth my time working with Appen.
Thanks,
Laura

You can link your PayPal Account with Payoneer so you get your funds that way so when you get paid via Payoneer they pay you the amount into your registered PayPal Account. I got paid that way when I did the 5 USD Appen Survey and received £3.75 into my PayPal Account from Payoneer.
It was when I had to sign up for Payoneer for Appen to pay me that during the sign up process I was given the option of adding my PayPal e-mail address so I could receive funds that way.
Obviously you still lose a bit fee wise but still better than any other method.

I tried to qualify for Java too and failed twice.

Project length varies massively because it's all dependent on their client whose needs seem to change overnight. I was doing extra hours until two weeks before my recent project ended out of the blue. First project was spot on a year, second about 8 months, a recent one was only a few batches of work over a month roughly. If you get a decent project manager they'll answer questions about how long the project lasts but I think some are almost as in the dark as the contractors.

I got an email from Appen saying that they are wanting to recruit over 65's to do the 900 voice recordings. They've upped the payment to $100 which is more appropriate given the work involved but seems a bit unfair to those who spent 8 hours on the same task and only received $48.

What with the comments on this thread and all the faffing about with them and the fact that I've been registered for almost a year and got nowhere - I closed my account with them yesterday and am trying my luck with Lionbridge.

@snowwhyte @dream of silver - where did you see the 900 phrases for over 65s? I too have been doing the 800 phrase for $50 task and it has taken me nearly four hours so far to get to 360 phrases!

I emailed to say that it's not possible to do this task in the advertised time of 3 hours - but the response was not very forthcoming, they said it's an estimation based on their experience with similar tasks.
Clearly the "similar tasks" were all completed by fast-talking octopuses that talk like chipmunks in order to get it done in 3 hours!

@MoneyGnome I received an email from them saying they were wanting to recruit kids and older folks to record phrases. It's only 860 phrases for the over 65's, I rounded up to 900.
I think Appen might have based their time estimate on previous tasks where they gave you a short phrase to say and you didn't have to read instructions, come up with a phrase and then transcribe it. Were they deliberately misleading people? I'm not sure. If any of their staff had tried the task surely they would have realised that it's impossible to do the 4 phrases per minute needed to get it all done in three hours.

Just had an email invite from 'Randy' at Appen for a one off 1 hour project to 'train robots to speak to humans', with a 4 hour project after.

Anyone else had this? the grammar isn't quite correct (which always makes me more suspicious but could simply be down to language differences) and I have to click on a link (which I try NEVER to do in emails) to sign up.
Hovering over the link it does seem to be appen based though.

Another strange thing is that he said that he saw my profile on smartrecruiters.com - never heard of them and never joined them??????????????????????

How weird @Jon. I googled his name and it does link to Appen. No idea what the 'smartrecruiters' bit is about though in my email. Did your email mention that too or were you just approached as being with Appen?

I haven't done any recent work with them but I AM on their books still, I think!
