I got an email from Appen saying that they are wanting to recruit over 65's to do the 900 voice recordings. They've upped the payment to $100 which is more appropriate given the work involved but seems a bit unfair to those who spent 8 hours on the same task and only received $48.

The pay for the speech task was not worth the effort involved!

How weird @Jon. I googled his name and it does link to Appen. No idea what the 'smartrecruiters' bit is about though in my email. Did your email mention that too or were you just approached as being with Appen?

I haven't done any recent work with them but I AM on their books still, I think!
@Knopfler i got the same email. Haven’t had time to look into it yet but Randy is real I think as I had en email exchange with him about another issue!

And now I’ve got this one!!

Thank you again for your interest to apply as Social Media Evaluator. We want to let you know that you have another opportunity with Appen.

Do you want to help train speech recognition and voice assistant systems? If so, we’d like to offer you a chance to help using our app that will help build smarter AI that can understand you and how you speak. Appen is seeking Android and iOS users for a large-scale speech collection project. In this collection, users will utilize Appen’s smartphone app to record various phrases that can be used to train voice assistant systems.

We are also looking for a Native/Bilingual British English speakers anywhere in United Kingdom for a project that aims to train robots to talk to humans in different scenarios, such as making phone call, or directing a device, etc.

If this sounds interesting to you, we would love to hear from you! Please click on the link below to sign up and express your interest. If you are selected for this task, we will be in touch shortly.

Looking for more projects? You can participate in other projects available once you have registered in either one of the links provided below!

Please disregard this message if you have applied to Appen or if an invite was already sent to you. Instead, you may check your connect.appen.com dashboard for the project stated below.

Yip I got this one too, I seem to be getting emails every other day for the speech ones. If they increased the pay for it they might get more of an uptake on it.

I have also received an email for the Carmel project saying that the survey is now live but no links to it... does anyone know where can I find it?

and finally... I have been invited to a Lionbridge exam!!! Fingers crossed I pass it!

Hi all,

I did the (horrendously long and repetitive) speech collection task with Appen, finished it and submitted it 2 weeks ago today, yet haven't been paid yet? I thought it was weekly pay with Appen Global - but have I got that wrong? Help! I've messaged them twice using the Support form on the website but heard nothing back as yet. Have never done a project with Appen before so a bit worried now!

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve done any appen work but I think we only got paid once a month for this sort of work.

When I worked for leapforce (which is now appen) doing web search evaluator work we only got paid once a month then

Thank you for the reply Jon. I spent over 9 hours on it in total (got to a point where I thought I may as well finish it and at least get some money) so really hoping you're right! x

I tried to qualify for Java too and failed twice.

Project length varies massively because it's all dependent on their client whose needs seem to change overnight. I was doing extra hours until two weeks before my recent project ended out of the blue. First project was spot on a year, second about 8 months, a recent one was only a few batches of work over a month roughly. If you get a decent project manager they'll answer questions about how long the project lasts but I think some are almost as in the dark as the contractors.

I just tried Java and failed to... may wait until the weekend to re-take it but had anyone passed this test? i find the guidelines so misleading...

I see they now think the speech collection task may take up to four hours; from the feedback on here, I suggest that they are still way out.

This is also now been used as a bribe to get first dibs on future similar tasks - hmm, thanks but I'll pass!

I really don't understand how these companies work... I have been applying for positions since last August, not heard a word. Then, all of a sudden, I have "qualified" for 3 different projects with Appen:
- one of them, I can't access the surveys because even though I have received numerous emails asking me to start, the dashboard shoes as processing still
- I couldn't pass the test for another
- Last one, I sent my documentation and nothing else happened. Because of this, every time I log into the portal to see if I can apply for any other positions or check the status of the other applications, I keep seeing a message thanking me for sending the paperwork back and no matter where I click on the screen I am taken to the same message.

In the meantime, with Lionbridge:
- I was told I would start the exam next Wednesday 22nd, have documentation signed and everything
- I tried to apply for a second position but was told that because I was due to be examined I could not apply

But then.. surprise!!! I received an email yesterday saying that they could not fit me in the exam and best of luck.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING.

These companies are a law unto themselves in how they work outside of the Web Search Evaluator stuff I would say.

As for Lionbridge, they clearly have more potential workers than they do spaces at the moment which is surprising as I thought they had a 'here is 11 months work and then you are booted off' policy!

It is a bit demoralising to be honest... I can understand they have more applicants than openings, but don't waste our time asking us to sign paperwork, complete questionnaires, giving us exam dates and preventing us from applying for other positions only to withdraw us from the exam and "good luck!". I mean, sure that is more work for them too?

Anyway, I have now gone back to not having anything with either Appen or Lionbridge so I will keep trying.

Hi guys,

I am looking to sign up to Appen (although the rhetoric is currently a bit negative here about it) and was after some help.

At signup they ask for a CV or Business Profile. May I ask what they mean by Business Profile?

Thanks
