That's the thing anytime there's issue you rarely get prompt feedback from support so gave it a miss.

Received an email from Appen asking me to rate the support from the ticket I sent last week. Wonder if that's the one they didn't reply to...

They seem to have cut down the amount of surveys we do in the week, as well as the pay

Hiya guys, so I hit the jackpot on the mystery shopping this month (don’t be too jealous, I have only had the utmost tat from China the other months I’ve done it lol) with a £99 perfume from a VERY well known brand with free returns. I was very excited for £99 profit lol until I realised their returns policy says packaging can’t be opened at all… so I can’t take the photo to upload for the mystery shopping review! The perfume is in like a little branded cardboard box which is sealed in cellophane and I’m assuming that’s the packaging I can’t take off if I want to return it… do you think I’d be ok taking a photo of it in its little branded box or would I not get the compensation from Appen? Thanks guys!

You can try to take the picture of just the box and see if they contact you back. I have always taken stuff out of the box to photo. The only other thing is to think if anyone you know would enjoy it for a birthday gift (hence save on buying another present) or sell it on eBay.

If you like it just enjoy it - its free after all, see being able to return as a bonus. I think its hard to send perfume back anyway, something tells me royal mail and hermes wont accept it

Thanks guys, with a heavy heart I did open the box in the end lol as I just thought it would look too dodgy from Appen’s end if I didn’t! I’m going to try to flog it on eBay though as I’ve checked and it’s below the volume limit for perfumes to be sent by Royal Mail and I don’t like it enough to keep it for myself haha! Thanks for the advice!

Had a sobering email yesterday from one of the sellers I'd contacted to request a refund.

It was a standard, and quite lengthy, reply basically saying that he is a small business that's only been going since Feb and has been so overwhelmed with "disingenuous orders on behalf of a business to test the validity of ...'s ads" that it's threatening the company's survival because it's a one-man band and he's now swamped with refund requests.

I've quietly tip-toed away from pursuing the request (he's suspended all refund requests anyway). It's actually a very nice product - just not one I'm interested in, so I'll hit ebay with it at Christmas.

I felt pretty sorry for him, and suitably guilty tbh. I didn't realise that they got so many people to order the same product (this is only my 3rd outing with this project).

This is why I never request a refund unless it's faulty. Also if you look at the notes for this project, you are not technically meant to do that but of course, once you submitted the forms, they don't check.

Oh bless him, I hadn’t realised so many people ordered exactly the same product either, doesn’t that make it quite obvious to the companies that this is not a normal purchase and compromise the “mystery” part of the mystery shopping?
I have only actually requested one refund so far in my three runs of doing this and it was for a total scam item, the other stuff I’ve had would have cost as much to return to China, USA etc than I would have got back anyway lol. But I definitely won’t be requesting any refunds from any small businesses unless for legit reasons thanks for the heads up! I feel like big international companies are probably fair game though should I be lucky to get one of them hehe

Yes, this is only my 2nd or 3rd go at a refund but the last one was such a faff, and now this, I'm almost hoping I don't get selected again for this project. For the pretty low fee (leaving aside refunds), it's a lot of time and effort.

Yeah I agree, a fiver (ish) per item really isn’t enough tbh, considering that’s half an hour’s pay and it definitely takes me more than half an hour per item to order, fill in the survey, upload all my reimbursement stuff, photograph the product, do the review survey etc. It should be $14 per item tbh but they obviously won’t change it!
Won’t lie though, I do get a bit of a buzz out of buying random expensive stuff without worrying about the cost so I do still enjoy it on that level :ROFLMAO:

I was picked for A*** for the last 3 months and my god do you get a lot of tat! I kept getting the well known Chinese drop shipping company come up where you have to message someone to get the order finalised and dear god what a faff. You have to wait 3 days before your order is even finalised. Glad they didn't pick me this month lol

Does anyone know where you notify Appen of your holiday dates if you know you’re not going to be able to participate in a project for a bit? Just been added to Ogden and don’t want to get thrown off but heading away next week and most definitely not taking the laptop camping!

Would not recommend these. All 3 of my invoices have had missing entries. I let the first one go, the second one was eventually rectified and my requests of correcting the third one have been ignored for nearly a month. Too much hassle.

I have been with appen for over 8 years and have never had an invoice returned, but I admit they are terrible to talk to on times and it depends on the project as to how smooth things go.

Was it the surveys? I have had one or two missing too. Never happened with any other projects though, just the surveys.

Yes the surveys are all I've done so far, I'm ignoring the other projects due to all the missing entries on the invoices.
