I've had numerous invites from them but I don't like the idea of being tied down to something.

I wouldn't say you are tied down, as with everything freelance you can always just leave whenever you want ;)

If the end client is the same then I wouldn't use the same email address
Thanks you for your reply.

I initially registered with the same email address as Lionbridge, I've tried to register again with another email but they said I've got to login with the original account I made, I know I can't change the email so I don't know what to do now, but I really need to start applying for more jobs there.

Project Swatara

We want to see your objects!

For this project, using your Smartphone’s camera and our Appen Data Annotation Platform (ADAP), we would like you to take pictures and videos of specific common household objects. There are 108 specific objects that we are looking for.

For each object you select, you will be asked to take one picture and 10 videos, each being 10 seconds long, of that object, under specific recording conditions.

You can decide to complete only one set of submissions, complete all 108 or any amount in between.

For a set to be considered accepted and eligible for payment, the picture and at least 50% of the videos must have been accepted during the quality-checking phase.

-----

Sounds horribly like that god awful 'take photos around the house' project I did for Lionbridge I think it was in 2019!

Appen sure do love the photo tasks!

Good day! Thank you for registering in Appen Connect.

We have a new project available for you!

Do you want to contribute to the advancement of camera AI technology? We want to see how people are ageing!

We are asking for submissions of 10 to 20 pictures of you at different ages and time periods. Submissions are done through our Appen Mobile application (available for Android and iOS).
  • Short-term earning potential
  • You are required to submit 1 current photo of yourself
  • We also need older photos of yourself: minimum of 9 older pictures and up to 19
  • We pay $12.00 USD if you submit all 20 pictures
  • You will be paid proportionally if you decide to send us fewer photos

Has anyone been invited to Stonecoal? Is it worth bothering with the qualification? Haven't had any good Appen work in a while but I'm not sure if it's one of those projects with only a few days of work

If you're in the UK, I wouldn't bother. I took the test last week and passed, one of the very few lately that I have passed. I got added to the task list and chat - and then advised that I'd been taken off it because it's full for the UK. It looks to be a fairly long-term project though when it restarts so you might want to try.

They've definitely toughened up the tests and most projects are on hold at the moment. If you look on social, even peeps that have been on Appen for years are suddenly without work. Some unfortunates have got so used to regular money that it's hitting them hard.

I understand that since the pandemic they've managed to end up with over a million people wanting work over the world. It seems to me that they're having a right clearout and review.

This is one of the major downfalls of Appen being a World Wide platform with not that much work!

Is anyone doing the transcription work? The reviewers seem to vary so much. Right now there seems to be a reviewer that is gleefully catching people out, even if it is a fraction of a second on a time stamp. Really hard to keep motivated....

Is it the same sort of thing as the work last autumn? I gave that a couple of days and decided not to bother doing any more. What they classified as an hours work took more like 3 or 4 and made the pay rate ludicrous. Also the interface and all the stuff with timestamps was way too fiddly.

Have been working for Appen for months and it has generally been really good for me, but feel totally scammed today. They were bugging me to do a task that involved specialist language knowledge (I have a degree in an obscure language). I didn't reply, hoping they would find someone else. I have a lot going on at home with my family. I eventually gave in and spent half a day yesterday doing it. I did enjoy it but it didn't pay well, should've been about $18 which would've helped with my gas bill. Log on today and they have paid me 80 cents. Gutted. I've asked them if they've made a mistake (fingers crossed) but if not have told them I can't continue with the project :( Word of advice, which I should've taken myself, double check the fee before you begin.

Hope you find out what happened there. 80 cents must surely be a mistake at their end!

I've been investigating and it appears that it isn't, unless the PM does something about it.I've told them I can't work the afternoon for less than a dollar. It was verifying other people's work too, so you need language qualifications. One cent per recording, the majority of which were three minutes long. A whole afternoon wasted. A lesson there, they're still a good firm but check the pay rates!

So they're paying less than 1p to verify a 3 minute recording in a foreign language? The most you could earn would be about 16p an hour at that rate - even taking into account that these companies pay way below minimum wage, that has to be a mistake. Definitely call them out on this if they don't give you a satisfactory answer.

This can't be right, even if you include countries with lower minimum wages, I can't see how anyone with language qualifications would be rewarded with such low pay.

I still get quite a few offers from Appen but I find myself more and more hesitant to delve into them :/
