Hello all

Yep uTest as a newbie is overwhelming. You do really need to explore and read - but most of it will still seem like gobbledygook.

I am not techie in any way, but sometimes that's an advantage as they want testers who would use the test site like a normal user would. So don't be afraid.

Here's what I did:

You will need to be signed up and have set up your profile.

Go to: https://www.utest.com/articles/the-utest-academy

Where it says "How to participate" click on the link that takes you to a video course sign up page. Fill that in. I can't remember if you get access to it straightaway, but there is a video followed by some multiple choice questions and a couple of longer questions. Try to do this test carefully - don't rush it. Pay attention to detail. If you do well in the test you will get an invite to the Academy which uTest now seems to be running weekly rather than monthly.

Again when you are participating in the Academy really throw yourself into it, as there is a wealth of information and you get to take part in test cycles as though they were the real thing so you are really experiencing what it is like to be a uTester.

I started getting invites to paid cycles as soon as I had done the first Academy cycle. I haven't looked back since and I am turning down several invites a day.

And don't worry about the whole Sandbox thing. I didn't get invited until I was well into the Academy courses, and even then I wasn't informed I had passed for a couple of weeks. It seemed to be a bit irrelevant. I would say the Academy is the way to go.

Good luck to anybody giving it a go. I'll try to help if anybody gets really stuck. But I would say you'll do well if you're a "self-starter" and can use the resources on the site to find different ways of doing things. Read read and read some more :)
Thank you @coomassie_blu this is really helpful.
Out of interest, and for planning purposes, how much money can be earned with utest? Obviously it depends how many tests you do, so may be hard to estimate!

Considering giving it a go .

How much time do you allocate to this .

how long is the payment process and which medium is used?

@Cas I decline a lot of the invites because I work part-time so it's difficult to generalise. You could eventually do it full-time if you enjoy it and are getting enough invites. It's far from an exact science. Personally I've spent a fair bit of time on the Academy cycles (unpaid) and also I've only been registered on the site for about 5 weeks so I can't be sure in the long term. Some days I'll spend a couple of hours - other days 8+ depending on how much I'm enjoying myself!

I also got lucky on my first project as I got a bonus for most valuable tester - but that was a bit of a fluke! That will have artificially inflated my first pay packet I think.

Payment is twice a month by PayPal or Payoneer :)

Hello @Lizziew24 yes it's impossible to say really. Some projects are better paid than others and it also depends a lot on the quality of the bugs you report. As I said above - I'm not the best person to ask as I haven't committed to it full-time. I juggle a multitude of things so I think of uTest as a bit of extra income - for now anyway.

I have had a couple of late nights when I've got really engrossed in a cycle. And also it takes a while getting to grips with all the attachments you have to upload to each report. In fact sometimes finding a bug is the easy bit - it's the faffing around getting the formatting correct that can take time. You'll get quicker at that as time goes on though, as you get more organised :)

I'll probably have earned about £150 this month, but I didn't get started straightaway and some of my bugs are "pending" - they can remain in that state for a while. I maybe wouldn't rely on uTest as a sole source of income as the invites can be erratic.

Good luck if you give it a go

That’s great feedback @coomassie_blu. I do matched betting, albeit simple weekly offers (yet to tackle the accas @Jon, still waiting for the idiots guide!!) and I earn about £150 ish from that. I also do whatusersdo reviews and usertesting which I earn about £40 per month. Just need to top up a little bit, so it would help! I only really have a few hours here and there and a couple in the evenings. Waiting on Appen and Leapforce, but that’s another story!! Thanks for the advice though!!

I’m around 5 week with utest paid project, I’m taking care of two young children at the day and will have around 2-3 hours a day to do utest at night. I have around 460+dollar so far. (Without counting all pending, because they may not get paid) Just had one week break for my son birthday but a good 2-3 hours a day and keep learning I think I will be able to get 600 dollar a month.

Payment is automatic to PayPal you set up at 15 th and last day of the month. In dollars.

I have a target for myself to reach 500 pound a month after three months. So far so good!

I’m bit lucky on the video part cause I studied media and I can easily edit or convert the video to the required. So if you need any help on video part I could help.

But I’m still working on different kind of log......

Thanks @Pixieyrj - I did fumble around a bit with the videos at first but I'm ok with Screencast-O-Matic at a fairly low resolution, and Freemake to compress if necessary (eg sometimes I have to film external video), and Mobizen for phone - again at quite a low resolution. They seem to come out ok for bug reports - no complaints so far anyway :p

Which logs are you struggling with? Is it Charles Proxy?

I went through with this Charles log with proxy after one of the project. Finally understand! And I just found the way to get the console log....

Recently there is a cycle special hunting for ONE specific bug (with full report) with reward $150!!! I was playing the game for a while but!!! in the end, the bug is occur on iPhone X........... although $150 doesn't cover full iPhone X... but apparently it fully prove that advanced equipment is really important!!!

Signed up to utest myself.

I am told that there are 4 mandatory Academy cycles that must be completed which involves visting websites and submitting bugs.

I've found a bug on one of the websites but not on the others.

There aren't always bugs, so what have others done to complete the mandatory cycles when you can't find a bug ?

Thanks in advance

My biggest tip is to take part in the Academy cycles. It really helps you learn what is expected & as you are with other new testers it is a great environment to learn. Usually with these cycles the websites & apps used have some easy to find issues. Keep digging & you will find them - check all sub-menus & links etc

Follow the scope. If it tells you to look at the search function, or sorting, start there. The academy cycles sort of guide you to where some bugs will be. Click around a lot. Test things as if you were a regular customer. The fact that they're using them in the academy means there are bugs there for you to find.
