If your car spends more time on the drive than it does on the road, then pay-per-mile car insurance could be right up your street.

Pay-per-mile is a new way to pay for your car insurance and is designed for those who drive less than 7,000 miles / year.

The price is based on the distance you drive, but not the way you drive - so there's no driver scoring and no curfews.

I've written a blog post that takes a longer look at the pros and cons here: https://blog.themoneyshed.co.uk/bymiles-pay-per-mile-car-insurance/ by using ByMiles

Nice find, car insurance is due next month as it happens, won't get a BM quote just yet as unclear as to whether they'll be credit checking me or not, also with traditional insurers the cheapest quotes are to be had 21 days before renewal and I'm not quite there yet. Have bookmarked though and will check back with them next month. I'll be happy to post back here again with estimate vs renewal quote

Read the blog again today, found that I met the eligibility criteria so applied and got a prelim quote which sounded good, proceded with the full application and was then rejected with 'we cannot insure you right now' message, 'click here to get £25 off a quote with our partner' so I clicked through, filled out info and applied and got the most expensive quote I've seen in over 10 years (almost 4x my renewal quote).

Waste of time for me but hopefully someone else wll get accepted and be saving money.

Can only speculate as to why I was refused and if the eligibility criteria in the blog is accurate then outside of that all I can think of is they didn't like either my employment status, that I had an accident in the last 5 years or that I only did 1100 miles last year and said I would likely do the same again.

The accident wasn't my fault, I wasn't even present, I got home from work and saw a note on my car saying 'sorry'. The mileage is the most likely issue I think as they make their money on the mileage driven but again, I'm just guessing. Re: employment status, I selected that I wanted to pay annually but you can only pay base annually, the miles driven are billed monthly and I recorded that my employment status is 'independent means'.

You might need to put a higher mileage estimate? There'll be no harm in that as you only pay for what you actually do anyway even if it's less but I won't bother having another go, they probably have blocked my name and address now anyway until next year I suppose.

Ah well!
