Hi, so making ends meet with a zero hours job/Universal Credit I have sold my household stuff on eBay. All under £1000 for the year.

Just a couple of quick questions:

1. Do you have to inform the DWP of earnings under £1000?
2. Do you have to inform DWP of a PayPal account for under £1000?

I wanted to start selling full time on eBay in the short future if possible. Any major problems going ahead?

Thanks.

As you've just made some money selling a few personal items you shouldn't need to tell anyone, it's not taxable income.

Also, read here about the DWP/Savings question: https://www.moneyadviceservice.org....savings-and-lump-sum-pay-outs-affect-benefits (Which a Paypal account would be if it's holding money, same as a bank account), I believe it's over £6,000 you have to tell them.

If in doubt you could use the 'Entitled To' website to check the savings thing, but you've just made a few £s for yourself selling some unwanted items, it's not a business or anything !

Note: I'm not a tax expert.

Thanks for that. I figured along the same lines. Just was worried and wanted to make sure!

So if I go ahead - (wanted to sell liquidation stock) would HMRC just want paperwork figures/tax form sent to them for the tax year?

Thanks @katykicker

I believe, from a discussion with a friend on UC, that it depends why you're on benefits. My friend had to have a meeting with a job centre advisor, and discuss her business plan, then she has to submit that months income I believe. BUT It seems to vary depending on what benefits you're on, how long for etc.

Would suggest giving them a ring and asking, they never seem very open to people trying to be entrepreneurs, or start a business etc, but definitely ask what they'd be looking for as obviously your accounts etc wouldn't be due for a LONG time if you started next month or whatever!

Nobody with more than £16,000 in capital is allowed to claim any means tested benefits in the UK. Do you think this limit seems a bit low? The reason for that is because it has not been increased for 33 years!

If you think that is not fair, you might be interested in one of the petitions on the UK parliament website at the moment, which is calling for a substantial increase in the benefits capital limit (petition number 590695).

If the moderators will allow me to include a link, you can find it at:

If you agree, you might wish to consider consider signing this petition and sharing it on social media, etc.
