I'm in the process of creating a Wordpress site and getting confused with which plugins I should have, what do people reccomend?

Ive installed some that Ive heard of before - yoast and all in one seo although im not sure if they do the same thing? Also installed google xml sitemaps but has to deactivate that as apparently it conflicted with yoast. Is there a good one for social media?

Thanks

I suppose the obvious question to ask is what are you doing with the site as then I can recommend plugins for you

Hi Jon, my site is a blog mainly about my home decor/diy projects. I would eventually like to monetise it with amazon when i get decent traffic and because there will a lot of pictures on it I was thinking of using pinterest to drive traffic to my blog? Thats about as far as Ive thought!

Ok so yoast is obviously a good one which you appear to be already using

[member=277]Chammy[/member] uses some nifty social media plugins and I think @katykicker uses some Amazon plugin which automatically turns your content into Amazon links where appropriate

I have the following plugins - my nifty social media plugin is a paid for one because I wanted something very specific and for Jon to stop complaining about the floating buttons I used to have. The one I recommend besides the Google ones, Yoast and Jetpack is Eggplant as it's great when you come to do deadlink maintenance on your blog (do it monthly to avoid a large build up). Obviously depending what you want to do and how you want it to look/function will decide what you install. If you want to know more about any of mine just ask :D

Add Categories to Pages - Easily add Categories and Tags to Pages. Simply Activate and visit the Page Edit Screen.
Age Verify - A simple way to ask visitors for their age before viewing your site.
Akismet - Used by millions, Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from spam. It keeps your site protected even while you sleep.
Archived Post Status - Allows posts and pages to be archived so you can unpublish content without having to trash it.
Cookie Law Info - A simple way of 'implied consent' to show your website complies with the EU Cookie Law, which came into force on 26 May 2012.
Custom Sidebars - Allows you to create widgetized areas and custom sidebars. Replace whole sidebars or single widgets for specific posts and pages.
Eggplant 301 Redirects - Create your own 301 redirects using this powerful plugin.
Google AdSense - Use Google AdSense and other Google tools with your WordPress site.
Google Analytics - Enables Google Analytics on all pages.
Jetpack by WordPress.com - Bring the power of the WordPress.com cloud to your self-hosted WordPress. Jetpack enables you to connect your blog to a WordPress.com account to use the powerful features normally only available to WordPress.com users.
List category posts - List Category Posts allows you to list posts by category in a post/page using the [catlist] shortcode. This shortcode accepts a category name or id, the order in which you want the posts to display, the number of posts to display and many more parameters.
Pinterest Verify Meta Tag - Add Pinterest meta tag verification code to the HEAD section of your site.
Shareaholic | share buttons, analytics, related content - The world's leading all-in-one Content Amplification Platform that helps grow your website traffic, engagement, conversions & monetization. See configuration panel for more settings.
Skimlinks - Skimlinks helps you easily monetize content by converting product links in your post into their equivalent affiliate links on-the-fly. Install the plugin and add a new revenue stream to your blog, including monetising the links in your RSS feed, without affecting your users' experience.
Social Network Tabs - Add feeds & profiles from your favorite social networks in slick slide out or static tabs - facebook like box, facebook recommendations, twitter, google +1, rss, digg, linkedin, delicious, flickr, youtube, last.fm, pinterest, stumbleupon, dribbble, vimeo, deviantart, instagram & tumblr. This one is a paid-for plugin.

Title and Nofollow For Links - The plugin adds a title and a rel="nofollow" checkbox to the insert link popup box.
Webfluential - Makes managing your Webfluential profile.
WordPress Importer - Import posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, tags and more from a WordPress export file.
Yoast SEO - The first true all-in-one SEO solution for WordPress, including on-page content analysis, XML sitemaps and much more.

Thanks [member=1]Jon[/member] and thanks so much for that list [member=277]Chammy[/member] think a lot of those will be useful :)

One other question- How do you get google analytics to work? Am I right in thinking you have to copy and paste something somewhere?

Thanks

Wow [member=277]Chammy[/member], very helpful list!

[member=728]charlyn[/member] I can't add to this but make sure you disable and then delete all in one seo otherwise yoast won't work. And yes, yoast does so your xml sitemap for you

Hi Charlyn,

Only install and use plugins that are essential to your site would be my primary piece of advice. Installing loads of plugins just for the sake of it will only slow your site down and that could eventually effect your ranking and your reader's experience. For example, you don't need both Yoast and All in One SEO as essentially they do the same thing. They are both very good but many people (especially those new to blogging) prefer Yoast as it gives you more direction as to what you should be doing.

The one plugin I would recommend would be WordFence. This will help keep your site safe and secure.

Great list [member=277]Chammy[/member] Do you pay for Aksimet pls, or is the basic, free one, enough? Thanks!

I use the free one.

It has stopped 37,360 comments so far for me :)

I'd recommend Chammy's suggestion Title and No Follow For Links. Especially if you intend to use amazon affiliate links, as it may help your friendliness to search engines. You can read about the differences here: http://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2013/07/24/follow-nofollow-links

It's quite enlightening!

I gave up with wordpress in the end and just used Google's blogger. Be careful what you install and make sure it comes from Google directly or a reputable site.

There are some great recommendations in this list to start with. There are tons of plugins to choose from which can make WordPress do pretty much what you want it to do. The one thing I would add is that as your blog gets older you'll want to install more plugins to add more cool features to your website. Just make sure that any you no longer use you remove as they all take up space and resources and too many of them can slow down the blog and make conflicts harder to track down!
