So my blog is going ok, I have not had much content recently so it's been a bit quiet but my new purchase of an ex-racehorse has helped. When I post about her, the trainer I bought her off does promote it and so my views go mad. Which is good. I still haven't got round to sorting out monetizing it yet. I was just letting things tick along and get going. But I have some annual leave I am taking at the end of the month so am going to get that sorted then (nearly a year after I had started).
YouTube will be picking up too soon, as I start to compete, that has been tipping away, I just need to get in more subscribers but I will work on that over the summer!
So next up, I have been thinking about it for ages. I have been listening to a lot of podcasts and thought as I have struggled for years to write my book about tales from the racing world, that a podcast, might be a better way to get it going. People have loved hearing my stories and I have tried to write them down but I just haven't got the patience for it.
While listening to my many podcasts, I heard about Anchor which is part of Spotify. They offer a platform to produce podcasts and offer help with monetization but only if you are in the US. Is there any platform like this that supports the UK? A number of the horsey podcasts also go through Patreon which offers subscriptions for content, I have looked at this but I have seen a quite a few very negative reviews for this.
So basically, good platforms to produce a podcast so I can have a more considered think would be much appreciated!

I'm not aware of something like Anchor in the UK but I do know a fair number of UK influencers who use Patreon - I THINK @Chammy has done in the past so she may be able to advise.

I always think one of the biggest advantages of podcasts if you can invite people onto them to chat and get that content out there FAR quicker than you can with a book!

I think the most negative part of Patreon is the fees charged but I've never really pushed it myself in order to see others - I had a couple of people subscribe for a short while but it's never been a focus of mine.

I've not dabbled in podcasts, yet but I attended a BlogOn talk about Podcasts by the Digital Marketing Punk (he's great, well worth following). His main piece of advice was to get your podcast EVERYWHERE you could. There are services that allow you to publish your podcast once and they distribute it to all podcast services.

After that, upload it to YouTube for more views.

Bigger money can be made through sponsorships too, so offer on-air ad space or do your own ads for appropriate affiliate links.

I personally would give Patreon a try, however, you need to be able to offer those subscribers more to make it worth their money. If all you give them is early access to the podcast then they're likely to just wait for it to come out somewhere free (or on a service they pay for). This is easy enough to achieve if you give them the chance to vote on the next podcast or ask questions you'll answer. Behind the scenes and bloopers work out well too.

I am doing a WordPress.com blogging course at the moment. You need a WordPress.com site for it so I set one up to play. It offers anchor and will make podcasts from blog posts. You get your own free link which you can post anywhere. I have not investigated monetising it but you can. https://theplatinumline.com/2020/03/18/foraging-for-wild-garlic/
You can record yourself and add music but this was my first attempt. They will link it to sites like Spotify and Google.

I had a look at your page, it is really good. Just an off topic - how did you get your Instagram grid onto the side bar like that?

Right, slowly getting there with moving forwards on this. It's going to be like the website - I will spend ages on it, then start!
So I have got a title and got my list of episodes that I had planned for the book. and basically worked out that I have 18 months worth of episodes for what I was going to put in the book if I run it in 5 seasons with a month in between season or a year if I run it fortnightly. That is just what I would have put in the book. If this takes off I could do guest episodes where other people from the industry come and chat about their experiences, which would work well. So I think running seasons might be the way forward.

Also when researching, they did recommend this, so you record a block once a month or so rather than constantly having to stress about getting something done each week. With regards to which host I use, I am erring towards Podbean which allows up to 5 hours in it's free plan before pay ($9 a month) or Buzzsprout which allows up to 2 hours a month but only stores them for 90 days unless you upgrade ($12 then 3 hours a month and stored indefinetly). So I think I will record Season 1 (which is 6 episodes) then launch and see how that goes. If I enjoy it and it is well received then I will pay up.

Once the book content is done, there is natural progression towards the Retraining of Racehorses work that I do now, so there is a longevity built in.

On the subject of paying up, I am looking at Patreon to offer advance content, interviews that won't be available free, Q & A's etc. As well as good old asking for tips via PayPal which is a bit cringe but seemingly does work from what I have found out. But that is a long way down line yet. I wouldn't try to monetize it at the start, rather see if there is a following then go from there....

Next plan is to get set up a mail list for my Blog, which I really should have done earlier. Then I once I get my act together with the podcast I can use that to push it as well as probably Instagram. So I need to work out how to add that on to my site.

I'll throw in a few insights on Patreon. Again not mine but one of my kids has a bunch of patreons, she offers them early access/previews of content and also does streams via Twitch showing them work in progress and answering questions plus their names appear on the videos. There is also a discord. It is not super hard work but it also isn't a passive income stream, you have to factor in their extras into your work schedule.

I am a Patreon myself for a podcaster but I am one of those less demanding ones, I support because I want to support them and seldom bother with the extra stuff, ie, a creator's dream!

That is interesting and I really appreciate your input. I would love to think that I could find a few people like you to just fund the cost of hosting it, rather than it making me rich!
