How annoying are they, really?

I know I tend to close them BUT I keep being told they're a great way to build up your subscriber base.

I'm looking at sending out a monthly newsletter for ChammyIRL so obviously need to encourage people to sign up. I have a signup tab on my FB page and I'll have one on my sidebar so will that be enough or should I add a popup box and hope it doesn't put my readers off?

I often just close them without a second thought, it doesn't put me off and it generally doesn't increase my desire to sign up - most often I'll sign up for newsletters as part of a purchase when there's a check box saying "do you want us to contact you with special offers" etc :)

Katy just sent me an article: Google don't like them so I'll not be bothering (I'll leave this post up as it may help others).

Once I actually have my newsletter set up I'll look at alternative ways to boost my base - such as competitions and printables etc

I have a policy of add blocking any site that pesters me with pop up boxes and am far more likely to never go back. I hate them.

It all depends on what the pop up says. If it's just to simply subscribe to a newsletter that might put the majority off especially if there's a sign up box on the site already. I know if I see any of these pop ups that just say 'sign up to our newsletter' I click off instantly but also feel that it was such a waist. Tryouts have about 3 seconds to intrigue your visitor with something exciting on the pop up that will make them want to give you their email address. Try offering something for free as an incentive!

Good luck

I'm not a fan of them personally and feel they tend to get in the way. Pop up boxes which appear just as a user is about to leave a website are becoming more popular on WordPress - think this is because of a plugin created by the owners of wpbeginner which they claim boosts conversions without annoying visitors but I don't know - these still annoy me! :p
