Wondering if people are employed (defined as contracted to work for wages set by someone else), self-employed (including if the director of own Ltd) or freelance?

I have a portfolio career which means I'm actually all three! I know, making my life difficult or what!! (on the plus side my tax return is no problem as I'm an Accountant!)

I'm employed 1.5 days per week to teach AAT in our local college. I have my own business (7.5 years and counting) so am self-employed. Also do some freelance ad hoc work for various people which is separate to my main business.

Maybe you are the director of a larger business with employees or a partner in a larger business?

It's so interesting that you teach an AAT course, as I've just been looking at doing one due to living in the country, and wanting to find work I could do part time or from home.

I intend to declare myself self-employed shortly, but in the long term would like to be employed!

Loads of great AAT courses for online or distance learning as well as in college, make sure you research which are the best value ones! Loads of opportunities to be self employed or employed with AAT and bookkeeping (even employed but working from home in some cases)

You should register as self employed as soon as you can then it is done.

That's what I discovered, some were charging huge amounts, but others weren't! It's on my to-do list :D

How do you find the mix of both Jon?
Leading up to going part time I was slightly bricking it but looking back it's been find and means that I'm not working every hour god sends in the evenings anymore!

Just be aware that cheapest might not be the best!

I've been looking through the AAT website for places that provide distance learning/online options, but have been trying to decide which is best for me, either bookkeeping or accountancy.

Start with the foundation level. The bookkeeping certificate is the first two (of five) modules of the accounting certificate. I would suggest if you are unsure to do the accounting certificate at Foundation, you can always just do the bookkeeping at level 3.

Thank you for this, I will mull it over. I think I've made my decision (90%) to do bookkeeping as I only got a C in GCSE maths, but I really need to find work that suits me and my new lifestyle. Will have another look at the AAT site today. :)

At Foundation the most challenging units are the two bookkeeping ones anyway. You can always top it up to the full accounting later if you like. There is also an option to do level 3 advanced bookkeeping and you can apply for bookkeeping membership and potentially set up your own bookkeeping practice. Just some options for you :)
