In a moment of insanity I've just handed my notice in. I've been debating it for a while but today made up my mind for me. I HATE HATE HATE my job and the thought of staying is making me feel rubbish. I can cope until the summer holidays but I can't come back next year and stay sane. So after August I won't be earning any money! I'm hoping to go full time working from home. Please reassure me that it's possible.

I do have some sort of a plan though to earn through:
1) Audio typing (think this could be £300 a month)
2) Task Apps
3) Mystery Shopping
4) Freelance writing
5) My blog (going to have to really go for getting this to make some money now!)
6) Matched Betting
7) Website testing
8) Selling all our crap that's cluttering the house

Any other ideas? I am willing to try pretty much anything legal but want to make as much as I can so would prefer to avoid low paying surveys. And I have applied to Appen etc and not heard back from any of them!

My husband is going to kill me! I haven't told him yet (literally decided this morning, typed my notice and handed it in 5 mins later!) and we've just booked to go to Florida next year. Have I just made a huge mistake?

Nah you haven't made a mistake. You'll be fine

To survive £450
To carry on with our lifestyle as it now £700
To actually manage to get away on the holiday we've booked £1000

Not huge figures really and I could probably reduce all of them more. We wouldn't have childcare costs, my petrol use would go down etc but electric use would go up if I was at home.

OK so I don't see a problem with this to be honest but you are dealing with 2 things here.

You HATE your job. Toxic work environment etc. so that's why you've quit rather than 'I want to quit work to earn all my money online instead'

The £700-£1000 target I don't see as a major issue. Just be prepared to do things you haven't done before either in the MBing world or with your blog to get your name/ brand out there and start hooving up some high paying Sponsored Posts ;)

What's your blogging knowledge like generally? I'm working on a project at the moment and could use you for some of the content. Can't afford a lot but I generally pay out £30 per article which is around 600-700 which you may be able to knock up in 30mins of less lol

Congratulations @maisiemog and good luck, it honestly takes a lot to hand in your notice and we've all been there, me included.

Would love to take the step sometime, but will maybe give it a few years as i plan to get on the housing ladder this year first. I've just finished one job myself, with my other job to finish next week, before i start my new job (change is the unknown, but change is good).

Wow, good for you. It must've taken a lot of courage to hand your notice in, no-one does that lightly. But it sounds like you've made the right decision if it was making you miserable, no job is worth that.

It sounds like you have a plan in place and you could probably reach the figures you need with Matched Betting alone, so go for it!! Keep us up to date on how you are doing and good luck!

I think Matched betting will help but long term you need to open up as many money avenues as you can

You will have more time than you usually do to earn online and I imagine you won't want to waste that time with doing surveys for 50p..

Welcome the world of 'leaving your dignity at the door' blogging lol

A couple of things.

1) Tell your husband ASAP. You two are a team...It could also increase the pressure on him to be the sole provider (even if thats just in his head, seeing as you are looking to bring money in also).
2) Based on your time frames, you work in a school and based on your income you are a TA/LSA. Can you look to do any tutoring in your spare time.
3) I think you can make the cash you need. @Jon's toolkit really will get you the income you want but you may feel you are still 'working'.
4) Blogging is more a side- arm of your money making journey. Don't rely on it for income but it might help promote some of your money making efforts. :)
5) Chat to your doctor about how you are feeling - just to make sure that there isn't something else that is clouding your judgement.
6) Really talk to your husband. Id be very supportive of a wife who handed her notice in, but at the same time I'd be disappointed they didn't feel they could talk to me about it in advance.

Schools are funny places and the difference between 2 school can be like night and day.

:)

All the best for the future.

Hi,

Don't worry I told him last night and he said he was surprised it had taken me so long. its definitely just the job that's the issue. Everything else is pretty good in our life and other than work I feel I'm in a really good place. I like my actual job role. It's the people that are the issue. Only want to work from home as I miss picking my daughter up from school.

I've got enough in my MBing to keep us going for an extra 3 -4 months as things stand now so now the initial panic is over I'm much calmer. And that kitty will only grow between now and August. We will cut down for now, and from August I'm going to do more audio typing and more task apps which should bring in £500 a month combined. I'm also going to look at starting tutoring. Had considered that before you mentioned it.

I've signed up to a gazillion freelancing sites to investigate them all and see what's worth my time and what isn't. I am a lot less worried now. I know I can earn the money and also know I won't struggle to find a job if I need to. Worst case scenario I know I can do agency work. My husband thinks I'll hate working from home anyway as I'm too much of a people person. I suspect he's probably right so by Christmas I'll probably be in a job anyway.

Two weeks off from the end of the week so it's a trial for how much I could potentially earn. I have no plans at all for the whole time so should be the prefect opportunity to see what my earning potential is.

Just be careful on those sites as it can very much be a race to the bottom. I actually use fivesquid myself when I need low-level content writing and can't be bothered to do it myself and it baffles me that someone thinks getting paid £5 minus fees for 600 odd words + research is a good deal but there ya go!

PeoplePerHour seems to be a good one to be up but you might have to lower your prices at the start so you can have some good feedback from clients to show

I agree. I know what I am willing to work for and what I think I'm worth and I refuse to go below that. I don't think freelancing will be a huge earner on some sites but some have serious potential. I think tutoring might be the way forward if I do stay at home though, especially for the 11+.

I've been proactive today though in looking into other options and think I've found the perfect job for me. Two days a week, term time only so exactly what I would want, and I know I can easily boost the pay up using the stuff I've learnt on here. Have applied for that, updated my CV and uploaded it onto a couple of sites.

Also applied for the social media role on Lionbridge. Had applied for the map one previously so fingers crossed. And I've had a successful day matched betting. Learnt a few new skills so I think I can easily bring in £500 a month with that alone. I'm not worried anymore. It was just that initial panic. And actually I feel so much more relaxed and happier. It was without a doubt the right decision.

Good luck Maisie, it sounds as if you have got plenty to keep you going. Like you, I am going to look into the freelancing world a bit more.

Thought I would post a little update.

I'm consistently making £150+ each week through matched betting (this is just doing the risk free reloads and price boosts as well so could easily increase this, especially now I have a very healthy float so can do higher odds!)
I am averaging at about £80 a month from website testing and I don't do them all.
Over the past three weeks I've made £250 from task based apps and mystery shopping.
I've also increased my audio typing and I'm going to make at least £300+ a month doing this. I quite like this as well. I thought I would find it boring but I think I prefer this to my actual job!
All of this while working full time so I can totally do it (and more!) if I wasn't working.

However, I've just applied to do my masters next year. I've always wanted to do it, and this has given me the shove I needed in that direction. So all very exciting times ahead. husband is quite happy to be the main earner whilst I study as well.

Congratulations on how well you're doing :D I'm also doing about the same with MB'ing.

May I ask what site you use for the audio typing? :)

Thanks. It's been hard work but totally worth it. It's amazing what you can achieve when you have a goal in mind (mine was the fact I'm determined not to have to cancel our Florida holiday or scrimp on spends there!)

May I ask what site you use for the audio typing? :)

I do two shifts a week on Take Note (usually the Weds eve and weekend) and then I do some extra stuff on scribie or crowdsurf. They all pay peanuts but I like crowdsurf and scribie because you can do a few minutes here and there. Take Note takes me 4-5 hours of pretty much solid work (although as I get more experience I'm getting quicker!) but it's a decent pay each month.

NEVER CANCEL THE COMFORT SUITES!!

Oh and email them and ask them for a lower floor room(s) as we did every year and they always obliged ;)

Do you have a date when EVERYTHING has to be paid by?

Cancelling is not an option. I'm too excited to not go now! We have until the end of March to pay for for it completely. The plan is to make lots of pennies over Cheltenham week then for spends.

Thanks for the tip. I'll add it to my list of things to do before we go. I've never felt the need to be so organised on a holiday before and we still have almost a year until we go!
