Time has come for me to buy a new computer, the laptop is hanging on by the skin of its teeth and I though a proper desktop computer would be much more robust for the kids to use, at least they can't drop one on the floor!

I don't have a lot of money to spend on one at the moment but looking around I've seen them for less than £300 but don't really know whats good and whats not.

Any recommendations would be greatly received, or anything to steer clear of!

Thank you :)

Can't go wrong with Lenovo to be honest

They are under £300 on Amazon and will last you for a good number of years

Good build quality!

That does look good but not sure I want another laptop. This one has been so battered, I am surprised it still works, it actually has a corner bit of plastic missing where it was knocked on the floor yet again earlier this afternoon!

Where do you live, the school i work at is selling off some decent computers for £25 per unit, (no good for top end gaming but for day to day use more than good enough) could pick you one up if you're not too far away.

Hi [member=1739]Nick[/member] , I've only just seen this, that is very kind of you to offer :) I'm sure I am too late now anyway but I have decided to make do with my laptop for now.

Well don't buy a Lenovo g50 like Jon said unless you get it at the cracking price Currys were doing it for on Black Friday (150 I think, maybe less I forget). I have one but with an i3 processor and it's shite. Had it 7mths. Hate it. And Lenovo bundle their machines with loads of bloat ware too. Can't go wrong with an HP pavilion (try a refurb from Currys; most their refurbs are just unwanted gifts that haven't been used)

I have a G50 and it's fine :p Though mine was secondhand from CEX and it's starting to throw wobblies - I need Aaron to take a look.

Bloat ware is the main problem when buying a branded computer... Some end up running shockingly slow!

Last laptop I bought I got from Ebuyer without any software included.. Cheaper and nice to just put my own Windows build on there :)

Will be buying a new one in a couple of months... Oh the joys of computer hunting! I'm really out of the technology loop these days so will end up asking for advice

New laptop needed here too. Went tits up and almost £200 quid to repair so decided it was not worth it. Would rather spend it on a new one. Hoping to pick something up after xmas. Not had Lenova before.

I think Lenovo are good too - got 3 of them in the family.

But if you want a PC that you don't move then I guess a desktop has to be the way to go.
My laptop might as well be a desktop because I rarely take it out of my office and I've got so used to dual screens i.e. big monitor + laptop screen. Depends on your budget but you might consider getting a laptop + a monitor, that way you could tell the kids it's a desktop not to be moved (they'll get used to the big screen) and then when they're not about you could break the rules.

If software is slow then don't throw it out, may be consider installing a fresh version of windows (ideally from the recovery disks - if you saved them) or perhaps install Ubuntu. Spare PCs / Laptops come in handy for Swagbucks watching etc...

Have to agree with this. Bought one a few years ago refurbed and it survives heavy use. Awful for gaming/graphic heavy stuff though - gets far too hot.

Got a Lenovo x121e a few years back and still running well, but now with Linux Mint. Can definitely recommend Lenovo. Tbh most new machines come with their corporate bloatware. Use HP at work, and they're pretty good.

I got myself a dirt cheap Lenovo (can't recall the model, but it was a Celeron with 4gb RAM and a 1TB HDD) - with cashback, it came to £150 quid!

I had a spare Solid State drive and an extra 4GB RAM from my old laptop that I threw in, these days I use it just to remote into my much more powerful desktop when I'm away from my desk (so essentially, its a glorified keyboard and screen) but it works perfectly well on its own.

Silent, no heat, build quality pretty decent and well priced across their range (from budget to high end). Definitely recommend them as a brand!

Best advice I can give is to steer well clear of HP's garbage - build quality is awful, they're loud, produce more heat than a furnace and their warranty is an utter joke (I've been burnt by them in the past...)
