How does everyone keep records and do any bookkeeping?

I was wondering if people use a spreadsheet to record their additional income or write it down in a notebook? Maybe there is some kind of piece of software that you use?

I am thinking about creating a spreadsheet and I don't want to reinvent the wheel if there is something already out there somewhere!
