Yes it is and anyone advising you how to set up this business may also be committing a criminal offence.

Yup, the sale of fake/counterfeit goods is classed as fraud.

People are often reported for selling them and places like eBay work to shut down sellers who sell these.

Definitely not worth the risk.

You can sell them as 'style' or 'replica' bags, but only if they don't have logos etc on.

If you're looking to buy and sell I would start on alibaba.com. I buy most of my eBay products through there and now have a couple of trusted sellers that I rely on. I also buy stuff from johnpye.com, but you have to watch out, they add 40% to the final sold price and this often catches 'newbies' out.

Oh yes, it's illegal!

I almost lost my, in very good standing, eBay account over this. A friend had some items for me to sell that I found out once the winner had the items, were counterfeit  Many apologies and of course refunds to get that sorted out.

Yes it is. Counterfeiting is illegal, and selling the counterfeits are illegal too. Even if you sell as a "fake Gucci" or "counterfeit Chanel" you can be prosecuted for trademark infringement.

Also, it is said that a lot of people involved higher up the food chain with production of fake goods are also involved in other serious crime too.

Steer well clear.

I bought a lovely Mulberry handbag in Egypt this year...

And a Michaeol Kors one in Turkey last year.

They are sold in shops everywhere, in hotel grounds, even in the airports, so I'm guessing they aren't illegal there. Move there? :p ;D

They probably are illegal in Egypt, it's just that the Police don't particularly care.

You need to be careful though bringing fakes back - you are not allowed to import them into the UK and Customs can and do stop people and confiscate them. Happened to my niece who came back from Tenerife with 2 "designer" handbags bought at a market.

I'm from Turkey. It is common that those brands have their goods manufactured there. They order 1000 bags let's say and then the manufacturer makes 2000. Keeps the other 1000 for themselves. People know they are fake when buying. There is a law against it but attitude is rather relaxed unless a big brand pushes hard for the action.
In the UK, even stating that you are selling counterfeit goods is still a civil offence though.

I've heard mixed reviews on alibaba [member=1474]Hook[/member] do you generally find it reliable? - you say "count on a few sellers" does it work a bit differently to a typical wholesalers?

Ah, a problem then. But just think of the free bags you could nab, and free holidays 8)

There are also specific criminal offences under the Trademarks Act >> https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/intellectual-property-offences/intellectual-property-offences

Prison sentences of up to 10 years!

I know about this because I once represented someone who ended up in prison for doing exactly what the OP was hoping to do in the future.
