Hi all, I have seen this on another site and thought it would be a good one for us too. Hope that's ok to start it.
Basically, we all talk about making money and sometimes decluttering. I have been selling my unwanted stuff for a while and made decent money out of over the years.

It requires a little bit of time and sometimes experience but you would be surprised what people pay for some stuff.

Few places to sell goods :
Ebay
Vinted
Depop
Shpock
Facebook
Car Boot

Music Magpie (dvds, cds)
WeBuyBooks (books)

The challenge would be to put a target to sell by a certain date(10 things by June 2018). I think instead of doing this monthly we could look to do this bi-annually / annually.

Would anyone up for it?

Really good idea! Unfortunately im a hoarder so I'd be terrible at this! Every few years I have to move to a bigger house so that I can keep all my stuff. However I am setting up something whereby I'm reselling items of technology (using my obsessive brain to spot bargains, then selling them on for a markup). I'd be happy reporting on how this is going as I shall be using some of the sites you mention for resale. Can I join in on that basis? It will certainly help keep me motivated!

P.s. never heard of vented and depop. What are they like? Also can we include high street resellers such as CEX or cash converters? I find that they can give me a nice markup on tech sales if I'm canny about it.

Nice idea this

I've not heard of vented before either

I sear I must live such a minimalist lifestyle a I never seem to have anything in our house to sell

Even when we do have spare clothes I just think "well, take it to a clothes recycling bank" instead of making money from it.

I am clearly my own worst enemy with this sort of thing lol

Cool!

I actually cam on today to ask advice on the best place to sell all my old CD's and DVD's

Can I assume from above that it is probably still Music Magpie?

And on an aside - see after this can we just keep music in 1 format - getting sick of building collections only for them to become redundant - I still have 45's in the loft that I point blank refuse to part with :)

New battle plan:

Having just checked the barcodes of 3 cd's I found:

Zapper - £2.63
Ziffit - £4.55
Magpie - £3.78
Momox - £8.18 (!!!)

However, one of the discs by Momox was actually 20p cheaper than Ziffit.

So, next week I will get 34 boxes and go through each in turn taking the best price for each.

It is heartbreaking though when you scan a classic cd and get offered 71p though

Are people seriously selling their CDs to Music Magpie? Come on guys I thought this website was about making money, not giving it away.

I took 4 CDs at random out of my collection:

Band : Album : Music Magpie price ; Amazon lowest selling price : Ebay average price

Belle and Sebastian - Tiger Milk. £0.36 : £2.03 : £2.20
Oasis Whats the story £0.30 : £0.45 : £2
The Divine Comedy Liberation £1.04 : £5.95 £4
The Jam Greatest hits £0.34 : £1.88 : £1.80

Obviously there are fees to deduct from ebay and amazon* and you might need to wait a while to sell everything but as you can see that is quite a difference in possible extra cash.

*Amazon's fees seriously take the piss in my opinion and I wouldn't entertain selling through them any more, things do seem to sell quickly on there though.

Edit - That didn't format very well. Hope it makes sense

This is a great idea. I did the whole cd/book/old games clear out last year. Went mostly for Music Magpie but if anything could fetch £3+ on eBay i’d put it on there.

I’ve got STACKS of stuff at my parents house in the spare room in several boxes marked ‘eBay’ but I haven’t got round to it.

Mainly old clothes but unusual/branded stuff that I know will sell for a few quid a pop.

My Dad has said he’s going to give me a date and if it isn’t clear by then it’s chucked out.

So between that threat and this thread I should have the motivation!

I’d like to throw my personal target into the mix and say that my goal is to have it all listed on eBay by Christmas.

Ps. Probably basic common sense but here’s my eBay tip:

I find the best way to deal with a mass listing session on eBay is to set aside a few hours to take good photographs of EVERYTHING using your smartphone.

Then you are free to list the items over the following few days as and when you get spare time using the eBay app.

List while you’re watching crap on tv. List on the train. List on the treadmill at the gym. List in the hospital waiting room after you break your nose from falling over on the treadmill...

You get the idea. I’m going to bed :)

Yes of course, whatever works !

@homie yes I agree but I used them twice when I didn't have much time or patience and worked well for me.

@Jon it also means you didn't have to waste money on lots of stuff :p

@silverhoop I wouldn't want to part with 45s either, understandable! Make sure you read the terms of the sites as they can "reject" items even after you send them and then to get back you need to pay the postage usually.

Ok let's see how this goes. Probably will keep it "informal". I have few listings on Vinted and I will focus on selling them (probably will also list them on other websites).

Also remember, when selling online, there will be always idiots to deal with. Don't let them to annoy you!

Are local facebook groups not the easiest way to flog things?
local pickup and no wins must make it a win win!

also as i've said elsewhere I tend to sell all my techie items on avforums classified pages which is like ebay but again without fees!

I've tried local FB groups without much luck but I know they are a good alternative.

Also, another thing to remember, sometimes you will be able to sell the most unlikely items. You know the ones you think no one would buy.
@luckyj142 that's exactly how I do it too!

I think I may agree with you on that one. We sell a few computer odds and ends per month to buyers on eBay who are pretty good, only the occasional dispute so you believe them to be genuine... I've just sold some of my daughters ugg boots on there though and just had a funny feeling I'd have problems with the guy who won the auction. Lo and behold this morning he opens a dispute saying he hasn't received them, without even messaging me about it first.

eBay seems to be way more fuss than its worth recently as now I'm going to have to open a dispute with Royal Mail. Think it depends what you're selling on eBay as well as to whether you get decent money. With baby things people want something for nothing. With computer parts as long as its listed for less than what it would sell for in the shops at a price that isn't taking the p*ss, we seem to get sales

Just thought I'd add my thoughts on EBay.
I always used to sell bits and bobs from around the house on eBay and could see that certain catergories had major potential to earn good money.I started researching kids toys... I'm not joking Poundland toys sell easily for £5.00 on there. I tried this and spent £5.00 in Poundland and listed them for £5.00 each. Within a few days, after fees and postage i'd made £2.82 profit per item!! I slowly built this up over a year until I was selling 150+ items and earning enough to quit my majorly boring 9-5 job. I then got a bit bored with the toys and wanted to try and sell in the area that is my major hobby!!! I know have my own online business in personalisation, even with a big local customer base and my own website, EBay is still by far where most of my income comes in.
In terms of disputes etc my advice is (and never fails):
• Send everything (and I mean everything) signed for. This way the customer has no legs to stand on.
• take pictures from every angle (you have 12 free images)
• Describe accurately. Mention any faults, blemishes etc.
• Work out all fees, P&P and item cost so you can get the profit you want.
I used to get a few disputes until I got the hang of things. Now I've not had one in 3 years (well apart from those that try it on but ebay have always sided with me).

Just on the subject of disputes.... I bought a mobile phone on email some years ago and the seller sent me an empty box! I submitted a dispute and the seller tried to claim I was the one trying it on. Ebay were going to side with the seller at first because it was sent recorded delivery, until I pointed out the postage paid on the parcel was for exactly the weight of the empty box that I received, so it could never have contained anything when it was sent. Seller went quiet after that. They should have been struck off in my opinion because it amounted to deliberate fraud.

@Hawa Great advice. I am a private seller but I can definitely say good pictures make a big difference. I do use all my picture allowances on each platform I sell. I usually don't sell anything faulty but if I think the buyer can be a bit pedantic, pictures help.
For instance, if I'm selling cosmetics and on the packaging, there is a small stain/scratch whatever, I will tell this on the listing and put a picture. This also helps them if they are buying it as a present.

Also, 2 days ago, sold an old laptop for £130.
